I've been snipe hunting. Nothing like running around the forest with a flash light in a pillow case or sleeping bag stuff bag. Never caught a thing, but people were always laughing at me....

Stoopid snipes!

You could always cut the tree down. It would solve the problem.

Right now I'm guessing Cricket or Katydid.

Looks like Rick is the winner, I think it's a katydid. One day after I get frustrated and finally start researching it, there's an article in the local paper:
http://www.thestar.com/News/article/260154

They linked to this page with samples of katydids:
http://buzz.ifas.ufl.edu/141a.htm

None are a 100% match, but close enough that I think we can call it. Now to get rid of them...

Thanks for everyone's help! PPOT rocks (at least when it's not about politics! even though I'm sure the katydids are GWB's fault. )

"20 s of southwestern calling song [1.74MB]; male from Dyer Co., Tenn.; 22.6°C. (WTL142-8)" sure sounds like it.

True Common Katydid: http://buzz.ifas.ufl.edu/142sl1.wav

Has that w-i-d-g-e-t sound going on.

It's a Swallow - just don't know if it's African or European.
