Rick - no way to make a new civilian ownable full auto (or burst). You could maybe have one if you were a class 3 dealer and had a request on police letter head for a sample... otherwise, pre-86 stuff only...

I have the link on my other computer, but there appears to be a recently opened loophole with BATF. Seems a few full auto receivers have been legally sent to the U.S. as repair/replacement items and then legally made their way into the civilian market.

Here's what I'm thinking of. I'll find the legal explanation with photocopies of opinions from BATF when I get home.

No offense, but how would you know how to rationally justify my use of my guns?

I think he is referring to those of us who have lots of guns when we could probably get by with fewer and still do just as good of a job smoking varmints or "protecting ourselves".

IOW, I know I could buy a cheaper bolt action .223 at Gander Mountain that would reach out and touch woodchucks that are a stretch for any of my .22s, but I ultimately just "had to have" my AR15 when I got it. His comment when he quoted me, was pretty much spot on. I have a bunch of guns but would get by fine in my rural setting with simply a 12 ga and a .22 rifle. (I hope my wife does not read this, or the next time I get on a "gun kick", I won't be able to persuade her how bad I "need" the new toy...I mean gun. )

Ultimately many things in life are that way. I really don't NEED an old Porsche to get to work and back, but I REALLY wanted one (so now I have four ).

Whatever. You can have tons of guns, each with different purposes and specialties. I like to carry a .357SIG in cold weather, as it has a higher muzzle velocity for penetrating thick winter clothing on bad guys. .45ACP or 12 gauge is better for home defense, since you want way less penetration. AR-15 is good for hunting because you can get a second shot off much faster than with a bolt-action, if your first shot misses and you don't want a wounded animal running away to die slowly in the woods. I carry a P239 in summer clothes, as it's easier to conceal. My 1903 Winchester pump-action .22 is a great plinker, ammo is dirt cheap and it's not as much a PITA to use as a single shot. But then single shot is good for a young kid as his first gun. All kinds of guns have all kinds of justifications. My wife won't ever understand, but then she doesn't really have to.

How do you guys compare the different AR-15 makers? Bushmaster, RRA, DMPS, S&W, etc, there must be 10 or more of them. How do you pick between them?

I've got inch and metric versions in somewhat kit gun form, haven't really tuned either one. I wish the wood furniture wasn't so expensive. I've lusted for one since seeing a picture of one in the early 60's. 'The right arm of freedom', what a nickname (with the cred to back it up).

It's kind of like going fast. How much do you want to spend. IMO the best AR is a Les Baer custom
