Sydney Australia. If they didn't have barbaric animal quarantine laws for pet dogs & cats I'd be there now!

EXCELLENT BOOK! I bought it around 2002. About two years ago, my best friend in Germany (daughter of a doctor Joeaksa also knows there, btw) was getting married in a castle in Brandenburg. Wedding invite asked for books in lieu of gifts, actually books that had some connection between the guest and bride or groom. I gave them that book. Now I need to go buy it again and reread it to remind myself all I've forgotten about this place in the last few years.

Don't think I could stand the, how shall I put it, odor. Spent a lot of time with some very wealthy people from Dubai. You could smell em coming form 20 ft away. Never took a room higher than the 3rd floor, was about as long as I could hold my breath in the elevator.

Dubai strikes me as a mirage that might collapse. Some day. But I've never smelt it up close.

Long term goal is to be in the Seattle area. The 'great white north' is just a stones throw away, so I wouldn't rule it out. While I've only been to Vancouver once, it was pretty cool. er nice...

Being an old fart I can't abide cold weather, I like the snow but only in small douses.
I also don't like inconvenience and I think many of us Americans take for granted reliable water, power, roads, food, police, fire department, etc. I haven't been to Australia or New Zealand but I hear they are like So. Cal. and Ireland might be interesting (albeit cold and wet from what I hear?), or some of those tropical Asia islands. But until I see something better I'm staying right here!

New Zealand could do with more immigrants from the US. All the "dern Yankies" I know love it here. One of my very best mates is from Anahiem. At the moment our immigrants are from Somalia, Samoa, and Asia and seem to be very bottom of the barrell. No intention of working, learning English, or integrating with the rest of our society.
These days we are very much suburban Sydney as the two countries are so closely liked (thank you Australia). If you come over here for a look around please note we drive on the OTHER SIDE of the road. The weather is good, and other than talking a bit funny, we are just like you guys. |

Yup...south island of New Zealand for me. People there are the amazingly friendly and open minded, and the landscape looks like the pictures of heaven I saw in church growing up as a kid. Green pastures with cute little lambs and goats everywhere.

The Economist magazine runs a survey each year on the best city in the world in which to live, based on a large basket of indicators. For the last 10 years or so Vancouver and Zurich have been trading places for the top spot. (In the last couple of years Melbourne and Geneva have also snuck in there once, but basically it has been Vancouver and Zurich down to the wire.)
Having lived in both places for many years I understand the appeal. Both are close to perfect places in which to live. If you're thinking about retiring in the tropics remember two things: the average mean temperatures are rising everywhere, as is the sea level. (So don't buy waterfront, and be sure you like heat.) ; and access to good medical care will be an important factor as you age. I know someone who retired to an island in the Philippines for example, who died a year later of appendicitis. Don't underestimate this factor. When we wrap things up here we'll be domiciled in Lugano for tax reasons, but live in the south of France (I'm not saying where because I don't want Rob moving in next door with his Hummers, dirt bikes and jet skis :–) ) We'll also keep a place here just because of the friends and family that we have here.

we're not talking about long term fantasy vacations.
if i had to seriously get the hell out of dodge... girlfriend has family in eritrea. not that bad if you don't care about voting or reading newspapers. i still know a few people on the navajo reservation. i hate mexico, but there are parts of baja that i could handle.
