Porsche 16 cyl. engine.

There's a pic on the front cover of this month's Pano of that engine and an article inside.

Just curious if anyone here has ever actually seen that engine?

If it is the one in the open top 917 it was at Rennsport Reunion III and I saw it there.

I saw it at Rennsport too. I have some photos of it at home, but they are essentially the same as the one on the cover of Panorama.

As I recall, Rennsport was the 1st time the car had ever been in the U.S.

It was never raced either. It is a very large engine -- very long. In fact, I think the car was actually lengthened to accept the engine. At least it looked like it had been.

I wish one of you smart guys would explain to me why engine designers add cylinders instead of just increasing displacement. Wouldn't there be less moving parts?

Maybe the engine was already bumped up in displacement to it's max.

This girl got to be the "driver" in all the factory cars. Cute too.

My WAG would be that engines of smaller displacement spin up and down faster than larger displacement engines...

...and a bunch of cylinders just looks cool.

Because that would not be nearly as cool as a FLAT 16!

Probably because there is more HP gain by a fast revving engine (of smaller displacement cyls.) than in great big pistons trying to go up and down.

Besides a 1 cyl. 7 liter engine would look funny as hell!

Don't let this go to your head or over-inflate your ego...but your first pic is better than the one on the cover of Pano!

I might use it as my computer wallpaper when I get tired of the 959 pic now on there.

I have to disagree. As URY914 said -- the photo is out of focus. I almost didn't post it, but I figured it was still of some value. Apparently at least 1 person liked it!

Might be out of focus, but still better than the full cover Pano shot. Maybe because this one was taken at an angle that more clearly showed the complexity of the engine. IMO naturally.
