No street view in my town yet, but it has been helpful to me a few times when I haven't known where I am going so that I can recognize the buildings when i get there.

That is so crazy. But the pictures look at least several months old. Are these from satellites?? Ok, I am a little creeped out, that means they can probably see through walls by now, so much for privacy.

I wish it was a satellite. It's a VAN!. It drives around filming everywhere it goes. There is a lawsuit filed by a Pittsburgh couple whose home was pictured right up to their garage door. The problem is that their house is on a private road way off the public street, so the van had to trespass to get the pic.

Cheney got his house blurred out - call 'em up and ask for the same thing.

The most interesting one is the Big Dig in Boston. Aerial pics do not match street view... try it out!

somewhere in LA, at this very moment, the third version of a bad screenplay is being written based on google street view. the only thing we know for sure about it is a girl's breasts will be bare, and then she will be killed.
hmmm a Hitchcockian thing...a modern day Rear Window... picture Jake Gyllenhall as a young Jimmy Stewart type laid up in his apartment surfing the net on Google Street View which inadvertantly captures a murder.....with Scarlett Johannson playing the lead female roll as his hot, skeptical girlfriend... hmm...

The satellite view over my village is so distant you can´t even make out the separate buildings. Not creepy at all..

I think street view is great! I'm moving to Texas and planning for a house hunting trip there next week. There are a lot of houses for sale, and what better way to scope out neighborhoods than this? I've already ruled out a couple of houses because the streets were too busy or somebody next door has a bass boat parked out front. My trip next week will be a lot more productive because now I know where to go check out when I get there.

Scary - and I can't help but feel that there is some invasion of privacy issues afoot here.

It's not paranoia when everybody really is out to get you!

It is pretty amazing. My son is in an internship/study program in center city Philadelphia for 4 months. Back in January we were able to use Street Level View to see his apartment & neighborhood before we had a chance to visit.

Pretty cool. We could even take a "walk" down the street.

I do agree it is scary, though. Makes me think of the Gene Hackman/Will Smith movie -- I think it is called Enemy of the State.

I was wondering what kind of vehicle they were using to take the photos. A lot of the camera angles/heights are pretty tall, meaning they'd need an omnidirectional camera array on a big pole sticking out the top of a van or truck probably. Not the most inconspicuous thing. I spent a lot of time last night looking at "street view" shots of where I used to live in Chicago - lots of pedestrians on the sidewalks, etc. but NONE of them seemed to be staring at the camera with a "WTF is that" look on their faces. So the camera thing has to be at least somewhat incognito or inconspicuous. Don't know how they're accomplishing it.

A crazy "Back to the Future" kind of vehicle would get a little more attention from the other drivers/pedestrians, I'd think - people staring, pointing, etc. If they drove big trucks with "Google Earth Mapping Project" on the side or whatever, there'd probably be a lot of "exhibitionism" too. Maybe that'd be an interesting social experiment to try - wonder how many titty flashes and moons you'd get. . .

Anyway, just thought it was odd. Wonder how they're pulling it off in broad daylight, in urban areas - without getting so much as a second look apparently.

I also noticed that their database was off a little bit address-wise for my old residence in grad school.

Wow, how the F is nobody caught on camera looking at that thing pointing or leering or making gestures?

If I saw something like that driving down the street, I'd at least be like "what the hell?"
