while i don't acknowledge water-cooled vehicles, nor do they acknowledge me, i'm consistently surprised by the number of second glances i get from them (driving the 74-look) when they think i'm not looking.

So true for many of them. Even if we're parked at a light I can't get the to look or acknowledge.

Actually the very first time I took my 930 out for a drive a 997 turbo came up beside me, I got a wave and a horn. -I reciprocated and was pleased that the owner was aware of his cars history + lineage.

i think this is a reference to the 2.7 litre NA cars with their early emissions equipment (thermal reactors for ex) which made them slower and softer than the cars they replaced

A little California Hospitality for you, huh?

Since my reply, I ran to get my 911 washed and flashed a Carrera, red Targa (had 7+9s, looked pretty nice); and the guy just looked right through me...Maybe my white Targa is so shiny and clean that he got caught in the reflection and didn't see my flashing?

We must understand that we belong to a community of motorheads that are a breed different from the muscle car guys and the ones that own the car for status only ie the newer cars that you see the doctor driving to the clinic in my town he would not have a clue what the flash meant he would think his lights are on and check them.

Most bling of high value is like that; only owned because some turd on MTV Cribs has one.
Lol, I probably shouldn't even mention this before i get banned from the forum, but you should look at my recent off topic thread about this....

Okay, so the thread may fail to deliver, but if you happened to be in Charleston, SC in 2002? There was a tangerine '67 912 with a girl with purple hair hanging out of the passenger window flashing people (yes boobs) in downtown charleston for like 30 minutes immediately following getting her nipples piereced.. lol, yes it was my car Now that was flashing and we didn't just stop at Porsches, no no, were were saluting driver's of every marque, and even some people that were walking.

"2- '74-78 911's get a wave of sympathy"

Since it's all about the sense of community, let's not exclude our '74-'78 brothers. Emissions controls or not, those are still some sweet classic Porsches!

"4- Cayenne owners get a hostile stare or middle finger"

This one just makes me crack up. Hey, I just had a Cayenne owner give me a big thumbs up and a honk the other day, so they aren't all bad. The one thing you can say for the Cayenne is that is has made Porsche the most profitable car company in the world, and that just gives them more money to make sweet 911s and race.

I can see So. Cal being more of a cold environment for the waving and flashing simply becasue there are so many Porsches everywhere you go. It's not as unique of a thing as it is other areas.

Sigh.
Right on. And as the P-car ownership pool gets younger, the traditions go away. Used to be that there were damn few 20 somethings driving newer Porsches, especially when 356's were being sold new. AFAIC, younger people could give a lick about tradition. Look what has happened to the older VW bug. Seems to me that the whole deal has been taken over by another culture altogether.

Will that happen to older 911s? Hope not.

Wait, here comes a "Cal look" 911 with no front vent windows and the deck lid raised up on washers! Oooh, skinny white walls and a roof rack with wood slats. B!tchin, man.

Milt, you are partially right, traditions die with those upholding the traditions; but that only furthers the reason the flash needs to be kept alive IMO.

I get so forgetful that i flash people while i'm driving a different car; then think "if they have any grey matter in their noodle, they'll see my PCA sticker on the back window and say 'ahhh...' ".

As I step off my soapbox; my departing $.02 is FLASH FLASH FLASH.

I'm a young driver, and I do the flash.

My issue was with the post that said anyone who drives a new car is a poseur and the implied "any new Porsche is not a real Porsche".

I also think the post was misguided with regard that anyone who has a newer one is fiscally irresponsible and must stretch for payments.

As always, some of us work hard, make smart choices and can afford our toys.

That is what I term the eternally dumb argument.

I know that sympathetic wave. It was from a Boxster. I laughed, downshifted and passed him.

I agree with porsche356a. In 1986, my car was purchased by a doctor with $$ to buy it new then at around $40k. I could not have done that.

Back to the wave, just today I got and returned a wave from a nice looking gal in an old white Corvette. That was fun, a cross gender/car culture wave!
