Sometimes while driving my Miata, I accidentally wave at a Porsche. Don't you know they wonder about that.

356A - you are right; and you are right, if i wanted a new 911, i'd get one - but it's not a priority to me; having my 79 in the garage is plenty for my happiness; as it never sees daylight except for 1-2 days per month.

If you are young (as I am too) and flash - kudos - KEEP IT UP.

The porsche wave rules are nothing in complexity compared to "the jeep wave" you can find entire web sites devoted to jeep wave ediquite

I tend to do a wave to any Porsche's but i find that 997 drivers tend to be making a concerted effort to not acknowledge me as if they want to be the ONLY Porsche driver occupying the same area and that i somehow suck away their 'cool' mojo.
Some Boxster owners also tend to ignore me as they think i could not possibly be admiring their 'lowly' Boxster!
The only reason i don't flash is that i run my headlights during the day and i don't want the person in fornt to think that i am flashing to get them out of my way
It's that kind of attitude that ruins the 'family' experience.
full disclosure: i drive a 997 and i used to have a Boxster

On another note, i have enjoyed many a "follow the leader" drives on the 405/5 here in LA. harmless, safe and good natured fun

As someone mentioned the jeep wave above, there is also a similar thing in the Miata world, only they flash you with the manual headlight open button (pop them open and back down). I thought I had seen everything until someone told me about a circuit you could modify/build that would only pop open one headlight for such occasions, thus "winking" to the other driver... yikes...

You need to drive that car!

They sit and they weep.

I am in a part of the country where there are not a lot of vintage P-cars. I always get a wave or flash of the lights from drivers with the air cooled cars. Rarely from the drivers of a 996 or 997. There is a guy in town with a Carrera GT who always waves when I see him on the road.

Well, I like a lot of 997 owners, but I swear... there are some, this is an actual, to the best of memory conversation with a MARRIED 997 owner who was buying his girlfriend an Audi after he saw my 911:

997 owner: Do you... track your car?

Me: Oh yeah, I mean, I don't race mine, I race other people's cars (chuckling), but I take mine out to have fun in it, and take clients out etc... show them how fast a "slow" 911 is

997 owner: why the hell would you do that? These cars weren't made for tracks, you're just going to kill your resale value.

Me: speechless...

i feel like the 997 owners that we are referring to would not be on this board. isn't that the whole point? of course any 997 owner that's on this board is an exception since they are more enthusiastic and aware than the average 997 owner. all of the 997 owners who wouldn't know a "real" porsche if it bit them in the face and said "i am a real porsche" are busy cruising around in first gear (at much too low an oil temperature) trying to get people to look at them or trying to figure out how to get their tiptronic to cruise around in first gear so that they can get people to look at them...or doing whatever it is that people who buy cars for the purpose of status is.

Jeep wave, ..my daily driver is an older Jeep Wrangler. I get waves in that way more than in the Porsche.

I must really be a snob... I wont flash anything newer than 1998 unless it flashes me first... and most of the time, these P-Cars don't even make it past my filter. Also, if I flash somebody and they WAVE in return, I feel like beating the **** out of them.

I really am a nice guy.. maybe I'm getting too old.

It's more than a little ironic that so many of you air-cooled guys complain that owners of water cooled cars don't acknowledge you when, in fact, so many of you say you won't acknowledge them.

I will look at every Porsche I see. I can't help it. Air cooled and water cooled get my attention, and if the people driving them look back, they get a nice smile and from me at the very least - a silent "hey, I like your car". Personally, I don't get offended if the other guy doesn't look back at my car. So what? Do I deserve some sort of "respect" because I am a fellow Porsche driver. And ToddM, tell me your comment was made tongue-in-cheek. How's a wave any less valid than a flash?

I own air and water cooled cars and will drive them both on the same day - as I did today. I track them both and have more fun than should be allowed in both. I have met many, many owners of water cooled Porsches who know all about the history of the cars but have either moved on or simply would rather own the newer car. More power to them. Here are mine (and I'll wave to you from either car)

Why would you wave in return to the flash? Whats the point of having THE FLASH? Why don't w just drive any other car in the world and wave at each other? Why dont we just all all wave to everybody all the time?

The fact is, I know what Porsche is doing with these cars. I have very little respect for the long term viability of the 996 or the 997 in standard street form. Also, appearance wise, these cars just dont appeal to me - that is my personal preference.

My wife always shakes her head when these waves/flashes happen. She said it is worse than a bunch of women heading to the bathroom together.

Her disbelief and the waves/flashes always bring a smile on my face. And yes it is true that most 996s/997s are oblivious to the aircooled bunch.

Hey Porsche356a, that camper shell in your garage looks like it would make a great dog house for your pet.

That thread was one of the most entertaining things I ever read. For those who haven't read it, check it out - some of the 911 vs 914 comments are especially noteworthy.

I like the story of the guy who said "why would you do that, it will ruin the resale value" regarding taking a 911 to the track. We have a guy in our group like that. He has a 996 and I don't blame him....they break easily.
I don't flash - it bends the bar in the stock and can result in the highs staying on.
The only time I really saw the whole flashing thing working well was in the early and mid 70's when I had a 71 BMW 2002. There weren't too many of them around and as a group seemed to flash most of the time.
