Enterprise vs Star Destroyer

My kids have discovered Star Trek (TOS) and Star Wars. Thus I have been called upon to answer the following question:

"Daddy, if the Enterprise battled an Imperial Star Destroyer, who would win?"

Since I am supposed to have the answer for everything, I need the help of the PPOT brain trust. Who would win, and why?

My interim general-purpose answer, "Go to bed", is not really satisfying the horde.

As one set of vessels operates "a long time ago" and another group in the not that distant future - your kids realize any answer is purely hypothetical, right?

The Enterprise would win because Gene Roddenberry was even more of an optimist than George Lucas.

Captain James Tiberius Kirk would strap a bomb to his back, beam over, free and then nail Princess Leia Organa, and then blow the F out of the Imperial Star Destroyer as he beamed back at the last possible moment.

D.N.T. Captain James T. Kirk

Which enterprize? the very first one, XCV-330 was sup-warp IIRC, and prolly didn't have photon torpedos.
The first NC-1701 was the one that capt kirk had, it would get it's butt kicked by a star destroyer even if the destroyer's tie fighters didn't get into the frey.
The destroyer is about a gazillion times larger with hundreds of times as many guns. the enterprise only had one phasor and a few torpedos.
Same with the rest of the series of NC-1701s, until we get to NC-1701-J. That was a bad boy. It MIGHT stand a chance against a destroyer but I doubt it.

One thing that always pissed me off about the enterprises, was the fact that it took so darned long to fire. They'd screw around for minutes until the bad guys hit em a couple of times and their shields were starting to fail before they finally got a shot or two off. Haven't they ever heard about a quick draw?

The Star Destroyer would mop up whatever quadrant it was in with the Enterprise.

Squadrons of TIE fighters, bombers and interceptors vs. the Enterprise? NFW.

Hell, the Millenium Falcon could toast the Enterprise -- and it knew enough to RUN! from the Empire.

Lord Vader would fry the brains of Kirk, Spock, Deanna Troi, etc.

Star destroyer wins. No contest.

First, it would be dreadful if an Enterprise class ship ever entered a conflict with an Imperial Star Destroyer!

Here's some helpful info:

ISD: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Destroyer
Enterprise: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Enterprise

IMO, the ISD is in a different class -both literally and figuratively- than the Enterprise ships and would most likely win the battle. It's simply bigger and badder and also carries 72 TIE fighters.

Enterprise has a tachyon beam, which I don't think the ISD have, and some have cloaking abilities, which I think came from the Romulans.

Of course, I would create a story where the Enterprise won as ST is a sentimental favorite of mine.

I would tell your kids about each ship's tech and let them be imaginative about which would blow the ship out of the other.

Best,

Kurt

ISD would swat an Enterprise D like a fly.

I am guessing that you are kiddiong with this question or perhaps your son is very yong. There is obvisouly no way that ENterprise would lose to anything made during the star-wars frame.

Warp drive goes up to 12 and can out manover those slower destroyers all of the time.

I do like the Startrek!

Kirk would go back in time with Spock, find Chuck Norris and proceed to sit back and sip some good Romulan wine whilst watching his "secret weapon" from the past dismantle the entire Empire with little more than his thumb and pinky finger.

The ISD can go 10 to 100 million times the speed of light, according to the paper Alexander posted. That's pretty fast.

On paper, it is very impressive.

Best,

Kurt

Isn't the Enterprise basically the biggest Starfleet ship outside of the bases?

1 on 1, it would of course lose to an ISD, and even in the grander scheme, Starfleet has nothing on the 1000s of ISDs there are.

And the Executor class like Vader was on is just silly big...
