Damn. It looked like the Nissan was just glued to the track even when he took a bad line.

Hey Moses, how is life treating ya?
GTR has an official ring lap tim of 7:38; this was "out of the box". They are in the process of reducing curb weight over 200 lbs and increasing engine output. I wouldn't be surprised if they shave another 3-4 seconds off. There's a lot of technology in this car, but for $70K, I don't see why anyone would buy a new Porsche anything.

Life is good, thanks!
Porsche is still Porsche. I can't help but think that a 10 year old GT3 will still be a pretty desirable car and a 10 year old Nissan may not be so special. Also, I don't care for the looks of the Nissan's front, but I'll readily admit that may be because I'm an old fart.

Yes, don't get me wrong, I'd be all over a GT3 if I had $140K burning a hole in my pocket. It is the only vehicle in the current Porsche lineup I would purchase.
I dont care much for the looks of the GTR, either, but it still is rather embarassing (or should be) for Porsche to charge 2x the money for something that can barely run with it. Lexus is also comming out with some big hitters like the LFA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0m9FaT2Ltk&feature=related Japan has upped the ante in this price range; what is Porsche going to do about it?

well, he also wasn't racing a GT3.... he was racing one of the worst handling 911s available, and the driver of the 911 seemed to be drifting it / overdriving it around every turn.... Put him against a GT3 RS and a better driver... might be a different story.
Actually I like the GTRs, I've even driven one, but... it's not a Porsche, I think the FL Cayman was going to beat it in the one-lap this year until Leh hit a deer leaving the BMW test center

Yes, the driver of the Nissan was the better driver, IMO.

Would I rather shell out $70,000 for a 1998 911 turbo or a 2008 Nissan GTR? Easy. I'll take the Porsche.

In Road and Track last month, Steve Millen lapped Buttonhill 6 seconds faster in a GTR than either the Z06 or 997T. From what I remember, the times were 1:56 for the GTR and 2:02 for both the 997T and Z06. Unbiased driver, same track.
The finishing line in the article states that if it were not for the Nissan badge and $70k price, the GTR may very well be the most exotic car on the planet. Also, several magazines this month are saving that a stock GTR on JDM street cars has now posted a 7:29 on the ring. Nissan says that conditions were not optimal on the 7:38 run. After so many good articles, I placed an order for a white premium model last month. It is scheduled for October delivery. My current plan is to keep it and the supercharged 993. |

Guys, the GTR is as good or FASTER than a GT3 for HALF the price. Whats Porsche going to come out with the match it at the same price point?
The GT3 has been out for several years now, the GTR was just released. Where do you think the GTR is going to be only a few years into it's platform evolution? The ring times don't lie

why does it make a difference? You could tweak an Evo or STI and have it hand most 911s their lunch. If a gussied up econobox is what you want, then you should buy it.
A few years into the platform it will be a really fast car with little or no style and questionable longevity. That's my prediction. That and stupid kids will get killed in them so insurance rates will be through the roof. |

I give the GTR credence. I think its presence will affect manufacturers like Porsche. Healthy competition, IMO.

I'll buy that argument, but the lack of style is disturbing. In general I'm finding that too many products completely lack any aesthetic. Doesn't really work for me...

Do you think new Porsches have questionable longevity? How many engines and transmissions need to be replaced before you question the longevity of a particular marque/model?

I think every car built today has questionable longevity. They are disposable. Just another by-product of a f'd up world.
