Best Toaster?

After my divorce some time ago, I remain without a toaster. It's about time to buy a new one and I thought I would consult the PPOT "experts".

Since most everyone except me probably has a toaster, tell me about your toaster and what you like/dislike about it - pictures are always nice.

I'd like to spend around $50, but would spend more if the features warranted the added expense.

Need:

1) Two slots would suffice;
2) Need wide slots for bagels;
3) Removable crumb tray would be nice;
4) Ability to toast one side if needed ("bagel mode");
5) Light to Dark selector;
6) It's gotta look good.

Edit: This will be a daily toaster, not a kitchen queen, FWIW.

Anything else to look for?

I much prefer vintage toast myself. Why not do the upgrades and use that great vintage 28 for your daily toaster?

Or are you set on keeping it a "kitchen queen"?

toaster oven is good, no problems with bagels and because you are single you can cook chicken fingers in it too

Funny you mention this topic. Toasters are a sore spot in our house and a peeve of mine. The newer wider 4 slot bread/bagel/english muffin toasters now all seem to do a horrible job of toasting. We're on our 3rd attempt at getting one that can simply toast both sides evenly. We set our toaster to very light and flip the bread manually and toast it again to even it out.

I'm almost to the point to make my own toaster or adding resistance to one side of each slot on our current model.

The best toaster is the Dualit.

It is old technology, made in England from recycled Spitfires dredged up from the channel, with an old spring-operated timer and many, many heating elements. It's so old-school the toast doesn't even pop up when the timer is finished, you raise it manually.

And it makes the BEST toast of any product out there. Buy one, they aren't cheap.

I found one for $200+ (2 slice model) and am tempted. Looks like the kind of toaster that I could pass down to my daughter when she starts toasting on her own - and I could move up to a four slice model.

I am impressed with this spec:
Output per hour: 65 slices

I wasn't previously aware of the OPH standard. I am a bit perplexed about the odd number of slices from a 2-slicer??

If one conservatively assumes two pieces of toast four days a week, 16 pieces a month - 192 pieces of toast a year - over 10 years = 1920 pieces of toast.

That works out to less than 10 cents per piece of toast @ a $200 toaster price. I'd bet the Dualit will be churning out toast long after ten years of toasting.
