Do you think anyone has suffered buyer's remorse after a Barrett-Jackson auction?

Imagine spending tens of thousands of dollars on a numbers matching classic car. It looks great as its just been detailed. You get in it and start driving only to realize that it was POS when new and cheap. Now, it's an expensive POS, you own it and you can't wait to put it up for auction with the hope that some other fool will take it off your hands for the same amount you paid for it plus the fees.

Barrett-Jackson is simply proof positive that there are lot of very wealthy, stupid people out there.

He who has the most gold rules....A fool and his money is soon parted.
Yes I suspect that there are a lot of buyers with remorse.

I was at the last Barrett-Jackson (WPB) and saw a so-so RSR replica, built by a well-known local shop, go for $25k. Good deal, I thought. I saw a guy getting in the car and stopped to congratulate him. He had a total attitude and didn't respond, other than to say "it's my bosses car".

Found out later from the shop the car had a crack in the case. They knew by selling it @ Barrett-Jackson it wouldn't get the scrutiny it would otherwise.

So...to "Mr. Attitude", if you're reading this: Sucker.

I have to think that most of the people that are buying the 60's-70's muscle cars never owned one when they were new. I owned a slew of Camaro's, Chargers, Challengers, Road Runners and without exception they were all poorly made cars that had lots of rattles and rusted easily. On the other hand they all sure went fast in a straight line. Never having paid more than a few thousand for any of them I could never imagine paying more than that for them now.

The pendulum will swing back....BJ and Mecum are both disgusting displays of stupidity and the growth of the paunch.

And while Christies etc. may be a lot more elegant (read snootier) I've also got to wonder if a 1961 Ferrari California is really worth 12,000,000 dollars. Some dumb*****s on that end of the spectrum too I think.

I'd be willing to guess that most of the BJ cars don't get driven much. Maybe to car shows, on a trailer. Seriously, most of those cars would significantly lose value with every rock chip and mile on the odometer. More something to park in a climate controlled garage and show off. For that purpose, I suppose they'd do quite well. Personally, I think cars are made to be driven.

Good friend of mine found a convertible Roadrunner with a 383 for a grand once. He knew his business, and recognized it as an original hemi car. He put the right motor in it, new interior and top, buffed out the surprisingly good original paint, and sold it for 100k. Guy who bought it drove it home from Sacramento to Lincoln, NE. He made about 85K on that one, made a lot of dough on Superbirds and Daytona Chargers too.

I like looking at the crowd shots at BJ. All are guys +55, gray hair, some bald, some beards, always in jeans, loafers w/o socks, and shirts are untucked. Some have the younger second wife and some have the original wife that could use some work. All are trying to empress someone.

I have always thought the best cars are bought/sold through private deals, not at high profile auctions.

Have you ever noticed the facial expressions on the guys as they're being congratulated for placing the winning bid. Many don't look very happy at all...no smiles...no high-fives. Instead, they have this "Oh s#it....WTF just happened here?" look on their faces. I'm sure that once they sober up, carefully inspect their new toy and realize just how big a check they wrote, more than a few will feel kind of foolish.

Yeah, I wonder about that too.

So what if it the car was once owned by James Cobourn?

The guy that bought it is a DJ. That $12 million must be a significant percentage of his net worth.

Apparently half way through the bidding the buyer asked for a beer. The auctioneer responded: "bring the man a case".

I ran across a dealer in south Georgia recently who bought a BJ restored Plymouth Road Runner (lime green) strictly for his showroom! He had a budget of 150K and wanted it to provide a certain appeal to the older lookers in the showroom. "A way to get back to their past". I will assume the investment might payoff in the longterm, with increased sales as more folks come in to take a look and maybe buy a new Charger, so the investment had some merit here.

If one was looking to purchase a restored classic, the place I would NOT go to would be the BJ auction. A bit of research and time will pay off when so many cars can be had for half the dough and NO INSANE FEES!!!!!

You have to admit though that its very entertaining and certainly educational.

BJ's (can I say that without being banned?) is the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" for car guys.

IMHO they are paying as much to be on TV as for the car.

It is silly to talk about if these guys care about what they are spending on the cars. As if they worry about how much the dock fees are on their yacht that sits there unused.

Aren't those guys are just buying as an investment and will bring the cars back next year to sell for a profit?

Ah, just like an early 911.

Yep. There is no apparent end in sight to the escalation of muscle car values.

What we have here is quite a lot of hating going on.

Because it's had all kinds of money poured into it or was pampered it's whole life. I've seen some real piece of junk early 911s in my day.

Rattles, smoking, rusting, oil leaks everywhere, yep. They were real gems.
