Wow. Just plain "wow". I don't suppose it occurs to any of Coburn's detractors that a seat in the House or Senate was never intended to be a full time job, much less a career.

Clearly, one of the symptoms, and causes of big gubmint run amok is the mere fact that these yahoos feel their positions should provide full time employment, and an income and retirement plan comensurate with that. They should not provide either.

These folks should be supported by their own means when back home when not actually in session, and should get no more than minimal stipend while in session. That would attract a whole different sort of character, or, more accurately, possibly some one with some character. And it would sure ensure they get their business done quickly and efficiently.

How is volunteer work equal to welfare? How in the world do you read anything I've ever written and come to the conclusion that I should be vehemently against Coburn doing volunteer work? Hell, I wouldn't even object to his getting paid for his work. Unlike most of the worthless pols in our gubmint, Coburn actually has a skill that needs to be kept honed for when he goes back to the private sector, instead of staying in Washington and becoming a pro influence peddler. I relish watching Coburn expose others for the fools they are, both in the Senate and here on PPOT.

those babies are getting born free of charge to the mother whether it is Dr Coburn catching them or not, simple as that. What he is doing is saving whatever federally funded medically indigent program(Medicaid, the county "free" clinics and hospitals around the country. I also bet it is sort of a PITA to reapply for staff priviledges if you have a period of not practicing for 8 years, or however long he has been serving.

I happen to have been medical executive committees and surgical dept head committees at several different facilities and can tell you it would be far preferable to maintain your skills and not have to go through proctoring, or more likely a fellowship for a year to get back up to speed after that period of time.

He is a Republican, so obviously he is a lying bag of shyte. At least he is not an attorney

I seriously doubt that poor women in Oklahoma, in their most intimate moments before procreation, ponder whether or not Tom Coburn will deliver their baby for free if they can't afford it. Puh-lease.

The idea that Coburn is "creating" a welfare state by delivering babies pro bono is like saying that food-line workers at the mission are creating the homeless problem.

Did you really mean that? It isn't in green font so I can only assume you were serious. If that's the case, you are wacked. Sick, demented, twisted, etc.

If a woman is pregnant, she's gonna give birth. He didn't make her pregnant, he is just providing medical care to the mother and baby to make sure they are healthy.

Maybe you would like it better if the baby dies? How about the mother, should she be killed off? Or maybe you'd prefer the baby has complications at birth and needs expensive medical care for the rest of it's life?

This is the key point to this whole discussion. If he's away from his practice this long, he might just have to be a career pol as he sure as heck can't go back to medicine. Do we want to essentially mandate that our elected officials are career politicians? I sure hope not! I'd rather see them turned out of office and sent back to the private sector every 6-8 years. Exactly. Coburn term-limited himself in the House and stuck to it. No reason to think he'll not stick to his two-term limit in the Senate too and then go back to a real job.

Personally, I think this one is number one. Tom Coburn is not only a senator and a doctor he's a virtual stallion- impregnating hundreds of women in his spare time- while hooking them on a life time of poverty. I bet John Edwards could learn a thing or two from 'ol Tom.
