The theory of "global warming" includes the idea that the shift in traditional/historic wind and oceanic currents worldwide will lead to regional elevated levels of extreme weather patterns.

DUDE! Yeah! Time to surf!

Actually, our weathermen are talking hellfire like everyone else is
Yeah, Houstonians would have taken Katrina in stride, I'm sure.

PS I haven't filled up my car, bought any bread, milk, water, duct tape or batteries. So the fear to which you refer is not so universal.

Cat 5 potential by Sunday. The weather dudes were suprised by the strengthening. Lots of warm water in the Gulf in its path. Where ever this thing lands is gonna get it bad.

It still doesn't look that bad for New Orleans. These 2 sites are amazing.

All depends on the track.

IIRC the eye passing west of NO would be worse because the storm surge would be worse (wind whipped towards the shore as opposed to being pushed offshore).

If it stays >100 miles from N.O. the city will probably fare okay. If it comes much closer, I'd say N.O. is in serious trouble.

Tomorrow, my uncle is being evacuated to Alexandria. He's in Lafayette. I also heard New Iberia was evacuated today. Anyone hear anything about other evacuations in Lafayette or New Iberia?

Good luck fellow loosianans. leaving my soon to be waterfront home in killian to hunker down in n. walker till it passes. too bad my baby will be exposed. Almost certain to flood my area,so i'm taking it to high ground and parking her in the high school parking lot away from any falling trees. Lesser of two evils, i guess. I'll take a little possible bodywork VS. a flooded car anyday.

Any municipal parking garages in the area?

You all be safe up there, its only stuff remember that, a Cat 4 would have me heading out of town here in Florida I hope you all are planning on the same.

I hope this thing sheers and weakens for your sake, my thoughts are with all of you and I pray you all pull through with little damage.

Latest from NHC is that it's weakened a bit due to interaction with Cuba, although it looks to be strengthening again based on radar & satellite imagery. I'm guessing this thing will either be a Cat III or a Cat IV again by the time it hits land.

If any of you guys on the Louisiana coast can read this - get the heck off the Internet and leave town! Best of luck to you!

Latest from the NHC:
APPARENTLY...THE INTERACTION WITH WESTERN CUBA TOOK MORE OF A TOLL
ON THE HURRICANE THAN EARLIER ESTIMATED. DATA FROM THE AIR FORCE
HURRICANE HUNTER SHOW THAT GUSTAV HAS WEAKENED WITH MAXIMUM
FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 112 KT...SFMR WINDS OF 98 KT...AND A MINIMUM
CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 958 MB. SATELLITE IMAGES CONFIRM THIS WEAKENING
TREND AS THE EYE NO LONGER VISIBLE. AIRCRAFT AND RADAR OBSERVATIONS
ALSO INDICATE THAT THE EYE HAS EXPANDED TO AROUND 25 N MI IN
DIAMETER. THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS LOWERED TO 110 KT...AND GUSTAV
MAY EVEN BE A LITTLE WEAKER FOR THE MOMENT. HOWEVER THIS WEAKENING
IS FORECAST TO BE SHORT-LIVED AS THE HURRICANE TRAVERSES THE
RELATIVELY HIGH HEAT CONTENT OF THE GULF LOOP CURRENT. BEYOND 24
HOURS...THE HEAT CONTENT DECREASES AND MOST MODELS INCREASE THE
VERTICAL WIND SHEAR NEAR GUSTAV DUE TO AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE
WESTERN GULF. IN ADDITION...NONE OF THE NUMERICAL GUIDANCE SHOW
SIGNIFICANT RESTRENGTHENING OF GUSTAV.

Bob Breck, the area's best weatherman says a weak 3 or a 2 will hit land and begin collapsing immediately. He says if the pressure does not drop significantly over Sunday, we will see the storm weaken hopefully to a 2 by landfall. A cat 4 is virtually out of the question.

My family has only left once and that was when I was very young. way back then I guess you didn't get as many reliable updates as now because the one time we evacuated, we spent hours driving only to have the hurricane change direction and hit us there. riding a hurricane thru at home is quite an experience like not many others. 150+mph wind with 200mph gusts, not so much rain as solid sheets of water coming sideways. the wind howling unbelievably loud. 40 ft trees getting bent down until the tops touch the ground before they snap. power line arcing out and ripping off the poles while the transformers shortout and explode now and then. the usual garbage cans and trash blowing around but also dumpsters, awnings, sheds and pieces/parts of the neighbor's houses. and I'm not talking about just for a few minutes and it's over. nahh, that goes on for hour after hour. doesn't quit, doesn't let up. I sat outside on my carport until 5am for Andrew watching the store across the street get torn to pieces. it's quite an experience standing outside during a hurricane that powerful. and then by daylight everything is quiet and calm, everything looks and smells different. except for the destruction and devastation everywhere, it's usually a pretty morning. well, guess I should go start tying down things, get things ready before it comes tearing out of the Gulf. nothing like waiting until the last minute eh?

Yep, ya'll keep your heads down. Hopefully Mule's optimism will hold. Good luck, sincerely.

Bob Breck just said the storm will continue to weaken and stall before it reaches landfall, drift towards Beaumont, and go ashore, weakly, Tues PM

That would be nice.

Even if it "misses" NoLa I don't really want it to wipe the only part of the La. coast that was not damaged by Rita & Katrina. And that is where it has recently been projected to hit.

No kidding, hadn't even thought of that. I gotta go to the store

Isn't the storm getting stronger over the warm gulf water sort of what you expect to have happen?

I've heard of people putting a big piece of heavy plastic on the ground, driving the car onto it and then pulling it up and tying above the car. I suppose that would work if you don't have any seams or tears in the plastic.

Johnco, if you're still there, time to split.

Wind speed is down a little in the latest advisory but this thing is still going to bring an awful lot of water into the bayous. There are going to be serious flood problems.
