Wanted: A better online news source (not CNN.com)

I'm officially done with CNN. Yes, I know they're a liberal media outlet with marginal journalistic credibility, but up to now I've been able to look past that in order to find the occasional interesting tidbit of information. I've seen a marked deterioration in their content over the last few months/years - a lot of the stuff on their web site is now "video only" which I don't have the time, patience or desire to watch (not to mention it's usually riddled with commercial content, making it an even bigger time/bandwidth waster), etc.

However this morning I opened up their page to see what (if anything) of interest was going on out there and was greeted by this:

I understand that the DNC is newsworthy and probably deserves press - maybe even headline press (since evidently there's nothing new from the Brittany Spears camp this morning). That's fine. I don't even really have a problem with them posting a picture of (loser) Hitlary up there blathering about whatever she was blathering about. Fine. I'm willing to admit that's also newsworthy (more so to others than me, but fine). It bugs me that I have NEVER seen CNN.com use such a huge, eye-popping image and mega font-size since the day of the 9/11 attacks. So by default what they're saying is that Commie Hillary and her "message" is somehow just as of epic importance as 3,000 of our countrymen being killed in an attack by Islamic nutcases. I disagree with this. For crying out loud, she's not even the nominee - she LOST. I bet even Obama himself doesn't get this kind of attention.

I'll be a little bit presumptuous here and say that I'm willing to wager that CNN.com's coverage of the RNC next week is not greeted on their web site with NEARLY the same amount of fanfare and sensationalist horn-tooting. Probably just a caption under "other news" or something. Wouldn't surprise me.

So what site do you guys use to see what's going on in the world? Yahoo is okay usually I guess. Any other good ones?

Jeff, media bias is a reality that you can't escape. Why just this morning there was a great story on NPR about Sadr City, how violence is way down and the residents are taking their neighborhoods back, and this morphed into a story about an enterprising young man who started an outdoor arcade and is doing quite well.

BBC World News

They often have news a whole day before CNN. Reasonably fair & unbiased. And it's 'World News' too, not just the latest 'Breaking News' story in Buttville, Minnesota.

I look at CNN once in a while but a lot of the stories just try to make people outraged and I like to keep my brain more peaceful.

The older I get the less I need the sensationalism. It's not good for my peace of mind.

NPR is good and I'm often surprised that there is a balance of opinions presented, without all the trashy "news" about the latest tow-headed toddler who was ripped apart by her mother's Muslim Mexican boyfriend's shaved pitbulls.

I have Fox or CNN on the tv for most of the day and night. I flip between the two pretty evenly. Lately, I've developed such a crush on Megyn Kelly and Julie Banderas at Fox, that my lust for Erica Hill on CNN has waned a bit. I don't watch any other news on tv.

For daily news reading, my homepage is www.hotsheet.com . I check out Drudge several times a day, Wash. Post., AZ Republic and subscribe to the WSJ online. My company is the official newswire service for both conventions, so I see plenty of stuff before the news stations even get it. That's enough news to keep me away from PPOT for a few hours a day.

To be honest with you, I find PP-OT to be one of the best sources of news. Not only do you get most of the relevant news of the day, but the discussion that goes along with it can be quite valuable as well.

Sure, you need to learn to put blinders on in order to ignore a lot of the bickering and banter that goes back and forth, but really, there can be a lot learned there as well.

Believe it or not, the Christian Science Monitor has an excellent reputation as a news source - even amongst the folks that work with various three letter agencies that aren't allowed to work in the US... . www.csmonitor.com

Any religious based stories are labeled as such, everything else is pretty much true news.

You shoud add CNBC to the rotation to catch the two "money honeys" then (Maria Bartiromo and Erin Burnett).

I can't stand Fox or CNN, for that matter.

BBC seems pretty good, but really, the best way is to look at all of them a little and take them with all with a LOT of salt.

Use your brain; don't believe everything you read or hear!

Good thread-

Thinking is so tiresome. Fortunately our socialist government is more than happy to do it for me. Ahhh, serenity.

I had to dump MSNBC a few days back. Today, I'm considering joining the ban on CNN. It's not the fact that we (CNN and I) have differing opinions, it's that they only air the stories that will benefit their agenda until the possibility that "other news" is going to break regardless of their bias. Like some recent Obama stories that have yet to make it out of Minnesota. I'm just going to record some of my own news and loop it into the garage while I smile like an id-jut.

drudgereport is always a good source, and the links to other news sites are especially handy.

Believe it or not, www.fark.com, while a joke site, actually links to a lot of interesting news stories. At worst, it's entertaining.

Drudge is the People magazine of politics. Fluff and pulp.

This will keep you busy for a while.

A quote from what really happened site just now:

Now you will discover the definitive truth about 9/11 and learn why even the most popular movies on the subject have failed to address the evidence exhaustively presented in this video. The facts will make it abundantly clear that the so-called 9/11 “Truth” movement has been infiltrated and is ultimately controlled by the same criminals group who masterminded the attacks.

Yeah, I'd say that's credible.

Stuff like this is posted too.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2008
Bankruptcy Filings Surge 29%
Bankruptcy filings surged 29% in the 12 months that ended June 30, according to government figures released today.

Total filings rose to 967,831 from 751,056 a year earlier.

Business filings jumped more than 41% to 33,822 from 23,889 in the year-ago period. Personal filings totaled 934,009, up 28% from last year.

The data also showed that filings for Chapter 7 rose 36% to 615,748 in the 12 months that ended June 30.

Chapter 13 filings, which requires debtors to pay back their debts over time, rose 17% to 344,421 from 294,693 a year earlier.

Filings for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is designed for corporations or partnerships, rose more than 30% to 7,293.

We should see how long it takes to get into the mainstream press.
I have been reading this site for years.

It just provides links and some are iffy. A lot of them are true though, just not in the U.S mainstream press.
We are about 17th for freedom of the press.

The Paris-based Reporters without Borders issued its first ever ranking of press freedom in countries around the world. The rankings are based on surveys of journalists, researchers and legal experts about a range of press freedom violations, such as murders of journalists, state censorship, etc.

The United States ranks 17th, behind Canada (5th), most of Western Europe, and Costa Rica (15th)
The Middle East fares poorly, with no Arab country among the top 50 (Lebanon is 56th). Egypt comes in at 101, Saudi Arabia at 125, and Iraq at 130. Israel comes in at 92.
Scandinavia scores extremely well, with all 5 countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark) coming in the top 10.

Believe what you want, it really doesn't matter to me.
