I need help with my son's problem
Lately my oldest son (19) has begun listening to country music.
Just socially in the beginning, & he said he could stop any time he wanted to, but now it's every day - in the house - in his car. Today when he was at work, i went into his room to put his laundry on his bed, and on his night stand i found a Trace Adkins & George Strait CD. This is becoming a big problem & could effect his future. I am thinking maybe i should call the family together for an intervention. Has anybody ever had to deal with this? What am i to do? Help....please for the family unity...before he corrupts his little brother

I'm so, so sorry. To see such a wonderful you life....derailed by the horrors of Country.
Its so hard to deal with as a family. My sister promised us she was clean, but one day I walked into her bedroom, and caught her with headphones on. She scrambled to turn the music off, but it was too late. I can still remember the sounds of 'Redneck Woman' echoing through the house. It was a tough day......

You shouldn't fight it, but embrace it to absurdity; this is your only hope.

Does he have any Beatles, Stones, Creedence, Zeppelin, Who, Hendrix, J. Geils, Doors, ZZTop, etc. in his collection?
If he does, don't sweat it... he'll be back... he's just working through something. Might take several years, but he'll be back.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have similar issues with my 18 YO daughter but with her it's Hip Hop and Rap. I'd rather she listen to country. At least my 16 YO has good taste. He's even started buying classic vinyl. Brought home BTO and Grateful Dead albums the other day.
Country is so popular even in Seattle. We were going over radio ratings at work the other day, making some decisions about placing ad spots. The local NPR station and local country station swap 1 and 2 in every time slot, in SEATTLE. Birthplace of grunge, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Hendrix.

You can tell the world you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes when I'm gone Or you can tell your friends just what a fool I've been And laugh and joke about me on the phone You can tell my arms to go back onto the phone You can tell my feet to hit the floor Or you can tell my lilps to tell my fingertips They won't be reaching out for you no more But don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart I just don't think it'd understand And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart He might blow up and kill this man Ooo You can tell your ma I moved to Arkansas Or you can tell your dog to bite my leg Or tell your brother Cliff who's fist can tell my lips He never really liked me anyway Oh tell your Aunt Louise, tell anything you please Myself already knows that I'm okay Oh you can tell my eyes to watch out for my mind It might be walking out on me today But don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart I just don't think it'd understand And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart He might blow up and kill this man Ooo But don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart I just don't think it'd understand And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart He might blow up and kill this man Ooo Don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart He might blow up and kill this man Ooo Don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart He might blow up and kill this man Ooo

I'm so sorry for your loss...
Take consolation in this: It could be worse - he could want to be a whigger rap star.

Listen a while...you'll soon discover that today's country is a lot like late 50's rock...I've heard cover songs from that era. What goes around, comes around, I guess.

"My dog died, my truck is a wreck, my wife left me."
"My wife died, my dog is a wreck, my truck left me." "My truck died, my wife is a wreck, my dog left me." There, I think I covered 90% of all country music lyrics. ![]() |

If you love your son you must intervene now, before he gets into mainlining Western! This is NOT just a phase and he can't quit by himself. The lyrics are just too addictive (and comprehensible, not like the Springsteen we pretended to sing along with). Ya, I know it starts innocently enough with bands like the Eagles and Blue Rodeo, but the next thing you know he's mumbling lines like 'Ma wife ran away with ma best friend... Lord Ah sho do miss him'. If his so-called friends turn him onto Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard he's lost to you. I suggest massive doses of AC/DC and ZZ Top to start (tough love) and wean him down eventually to Greenday or REM when he cleans up a bit. Maybe Gene Simmons is available for a celebrity intervention?
Best of luck to you and your family.

The funny thing is that a lot of country music is mixed/mastered better than the rest of the stuff out there. Must be something about those Nashville studios/engineers...

Sell the dodge and buy a land rover- I don't think they can play country music.
Or like what kstarnes said. Maybe if you listen to it too he will think it is uncool and just stop? |

I grew up on country music. Started with Glen Campbell, John Denver, Olivia N-John, and now S. Twain, and I love Bad Boy Toby Keith!
I like rap also. Let him be. What did they use to ask?........."Why is there country music? Answer: If there wasn't, there won't be misery.....!!!!!" |
