The only time I listen to country is driving in the south. Daybreak on a highway rolling thru Alabama singing along with the hurtin' songs. Not too bad . . .

  • Personal pride in equality. No man, however rich or powerful, is better than me.
  • Perseverance and belief in hard work. If a man or a family is poor, it is because they did not work hard enough. God rewards those who work hard enough. So does the American system.
  • The only free country in the world is the United States, and the only reason we ever go to war is to protect that freedom.
I am a redneck and I don't believe any of that stuff.

I do eat road kill however.

I resent being called a redneck. Please, from here on out, use the more PC term "Appalachian-American"

I am fortunately, or not depending on the day, an almost perfect mix of Scot and Spanish...the lineage did not merge (much) until the marriage of my wonderful parents, at great peril to them from both sides of the clan/armada. I was told that at the wedding there may have been a tinge of regret for opportunities lost from the assembled mix of Scot Rednecks and Proud Spanish.

The families eventually fell into a quiescent period, which continues to the present. My comments in bold:

Uh-oh. My family were immigrants, the Spanish first in the early 1800's followed by the Scots during the gold rush. The Spanish actually wrote a bunch (my Mom bound their writings) and they seemed to completely understand that they were pretty much free to to go their own way without shackles. It is not clear that they read the Constitution or cared to. The Scots didn't like Lincoln. I don't know why. My Father's middle name is Lincoln.
  • Hyper patriotism. A fighting defence of native land, home and heart, even when it is not actually threatened: ie, Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Somalia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Haiti and dozens more with righteous operations titles such as Enduring Freedom, Restore Hope, and Just Cause.

Both sides of the family fought for America, a lot. They pretty much sat out the Civil War since they were all out west but they got in the mix in WWI and we have pretty much had a stake in every major dust-up since then. The Spanish were all citizen soldiers, especially in WWII...if the country need them, they dropped their civilian lives and got busy. The Scots, sorry, would fight over a dinner check even if the other guy wanted to pay. Two generations of West Point grads followed. Not me BTW.
But none of us have ever been hyper patriotic. We know duty has a price, however.

  • A love of guns and tremendous respect for the warrior ideal. Along with this comes a strong sense of fealty and loyalty. Fealty to wartime leaders, whether it be FDR or George Bush.

Stupid, except the gun and warrior part...my Dad has an old Colt Pistol handed down to him by his father-in-law. He gave it to him because he knew he'd appreciate it. One WWII Vet to a Korea/'Nam vet. That was their fealty.
  • Self effacement, humility. We are usually the butt of our own jokes, in an effort not to appear aloof among one another.

True. Every joke is on them. They are all funny people. I am thankful for both their humility and their humor. I got to laugh a lot as a kid. It never leaves you.
  • Belief that most things outside our own community and nation are inferior and threatening, that the world is jealous of the American lifestyle.

    Stupid
  • Personal pride in equality. No man, however rich or powerful, is better than me.

    Yup
  • Perseverance and belief in hard work. If a man or a family is poor, it is because they did not work hard enough. God rewards those who work hard enough. So does the American system.

Sort of. They all believed in hard work but if someone needed help you never had a better friend. Both sides. They would, of course, argue who could help more.
  • The only free country in the world is the United States, and the only reason we ever go to war is to protect that freedom.

Not sure. They came from some rough places, I haven't...thanks to them.

Ian

Eating road kill is one for sure.

OF course, I am a Louisiana redneck. The best description of that particular type was in Apocalypse Now. as they take Sheen (the secret agint/assassin) up the river to Kurz (or the Kurz like figure in the movie) the get into a really hellaceous firefight. The guy on one of the 50's goes wild. He machine guns down dozens of VC -- and everything else.

After they get out of fire fight, Sheen is a little taken aback, but still curious. He asks the guy what he did before he joined up. THe guy says:

"A saucier."

Sheen: "A _what_??"

"A Saucier."

Sheen: blank face... Guy: You know, I make sauces.

That is your La. redneck, to a "T".

And, BTW, I regard Trout Meuniere as a Comfort Food.

Now, back to the filthy treachery of those damned lowlander Campbells and the massacre they worked at Glencoe ...

Just when I think desperate Dems can't sink any lower. Hey, let's smear a high school kid! Is this kid running for office? No? Then he has no business on the news, and you have no business posting it Kachi. The fact that you did reflects poorly on your character (or lack thereof).
