'Preparing for the worst' by buying guns/ammo. Why?

I guess I don't quite get this. I'm a gun guy. All told I'll be I have at least 200 rounds of each caliber I own with the exception of my deer rifle (if your a good deer hunter, you really only need one bullet per year ). I do have about 800 rounds of 7.62x39 that my dad gave to me. But I have not bothered to go out and buy anything extra. If I stop at the range, I just buy enough to replace what I shoot up.

What is the point in hording ammo and guns? There are so many guns in this country, whats the point? And who are you going to be shooting with all of this ammo anyway? Roving gangs of looters in some kind of Mad Max future distopia with dictator for life Obama directing them to rape all the white women? Looters aren't soliders, their gutless worms. A few rounds of 7.62 sailing over their heads and they'll scatter like cockroaches. The sound of rifle really does give folks a moment of clarity, especially when delivered in a nice burst.

I just don't get it.

If you really belived that it was going to come to that, why wouldn't you just move to another country?

Very good question. I think that there is a lot of fear and paranoia among a certain segment of society.

I have the same amount of ammo I've always had, enough to kill 2 or 3 vermin in short order.

I view it like an insurance policy. Hopefully, you'll never need it, but if you do, it's there. I wouldn't spend money I didn't have on "hording" ammo/guns, but I think it is a good investment in the (uncertain) future.

I guess I could imagine localized chaos if a nuke went off in a big city, but I honestly can't imagine a total break down of civilization in the US.

I'm either not paranoid or unprepared, depending on who's making the judgment.

Assuming you aren't an oldster circling the drain, everyone here will see (close-up) civil unrest/rioting and/or looting in the future. It will most likely be localized with the potential for spreading nationally. Listen to me now and believe me later...

Put yourself in post-Katrina New Orleans. Would you rather have had guns or not?

I rest my case.

With guns: Can easily protect yourself, your family, your property, your interests. Gives you leverage to trade/barter.

Without guns: You're a target, especially if you have things that people WITH guns might want - property, food, water, clothing, shelter, money, gasoline, etc.

I'm not so naive as to think we can live without them. Throughout history, even the most "civilized" societies are always built on the pillar of good defense and the willingness of people to fight for their way of life and beliefs.

The immediate threat of an Obama presidency is that he'll go on a witch hunt against firearms and they'll be so heavily restricted as to be virtually impossible to obtain or keep. Any government that wants to disarm its citizens is one that we should be very, very concerned about. That's enough reason for me too.

And rest assured, if there ever was a breakdown of law and order in this country or a failure of it, or (more likely) we plunge into another Great Depression with open looting, theft, violence and lawlessness in the streets, I won't hesitate to look out for myself. The ones that will be screwed will be the ones that have drank the Kool-Aid and believe that government, law enforcement and the guys with white hats will always be there to save them.

Bottom line is I hope I never have to use them, but if the situation ever arises where I need to, I'll be glad I'm prepared and won't hesitate. It's an extension of the motto I learned in scouts years ago, "Be Prepared".

+1

And those are the same folks who consider us "gun nuts".

I was visiting a girlfriend (who lived in an apartment building) to help her board-up windows after tornado damage. All the neighbors saw me with my portable, battery-operated tools (circular saw, drill, sawzall). I was descended upon by people asking for help. I refused their money and helped everyone I could. I eventually had to sneak out of the building.

Guns = tools.

Ammunition maybe the new currency of 2009.

You have 2 hands.
You can probably carry 40 pounds of ammo around in a SHTF situation.

Why have 10 guns and 400 pounds of ammo? If you somehow make it though all 40 pounds of ammo as the waves of people stream towards your home (which is a target, because, well, you have lots of guns there that THEY want)...

As soon as someone get access to the guns that you are not actively holding in those two hands, yer dead.

Pray tell, where? In what country besides the USA does the citizenry enjoy the kinds of freedoms we have? Particularly with the right to keep and bear arms?

I've got a 2-mile line of sight, one road coming in and a block parapet wall on my roof.

Good luck getting to my guns!

They won't need your guns, they have your neighbors.

Oh, I have a 500 person standing army at my gate, c4 on all of my entrance doors, and sharks with friggin laser beams protecting my property.

Neighbors are 2 miles away.

You really have all that stuff guarding your rental apartment?

Oh, and how's beautiful Houston doing these days... (reason enough to have a stash of guns).

Well, that is why there are hidden places around for them, and nothing to give away where any are. They would have to know where they are to go where they are.

But it is one of the reasons others here are playing catch up (but I must admit, the main reason I have so many & much is just because I like them, much like my 1/43 models, not for any other reason than I enjoy them)
To me, there is nothing I enjoy shooting more than frozen 2 liter bottles

Gun nuts.

I've only got enough to get 12 of them before they get me.
