Randy, with all due respect I know Craig very well and I can assure you he isn't talking about starting his car and letting it run for a half hour. What's worse, letting the car warm up at idle with no load, or immediately driving the car under load and at higher rpm levels with cold oil. Say what you will, but I feel better if the oil temp has warmed up at least slightly before I drive around. Besides, his car has a 915 gearbox so you should be showering him with accolades for having the good sense to know what a pile of rubbish the G50 gearbox is.

I could start up about my parents neighbor. He is the only person that I truly HATE!

Takes the neighbors mail and throws it in the street.

Complains that my parents make too much noise - sometimes my parents aren't even in the country, I go to their house to do things and he yells at me about my parents. When I inform him that they are half way around the world, he tells me that my parents are lying to me and that they are actually still at home.

He collects trash from around town and deposits it in his font yard/backyard.

Used to play the drums at 2:00 in the morning...

The family took down the dividing property fence and bashed several solar panels and other equipment because they say that the property lines are five feet onto their property - true, but they were 20 yrs. late in making the claim. The father dies shortly after this and of course, we were blamed for his death.

He has made threats to my dad and myself, one time to my face, when I get pissed and tell him to get off his property and that "we can end this right now", says that I am threatening him and that he is going to call the cops.

Has basically done the "hey kid, I have some candy, come here" routine...

If you are more than 18" from the curb, he will call parking enforcement - the street is a cul-de-sac with no traffic.

Flooded the maids car to the neighbors across the street - she was parked 20" from the curb.

I see him driving around town. Sometimes, I make it known that I am near - he freaks! Other times, he doesn't see me, but he just freaks out and will stop in the middle of the street. When other cars honk at him to move, he freaks out even more.

I can go on and on.....

Threw two eggs at the Porsche one morning when it was parked in the driveway. My dad owned it then and the egg shells scratched the paint.

The cops can't do a thing.

I don't let my car idle for 5 minutes, not more than a minute or so. Craig personally built the 3.4 twin plug motor in his car, trust me he knows what he's doing.

He was in his front yard, I was getting the mail, he started making threats towards me from his property, I was in the street. I told him to come into the street - so that he couldn't claim I was on his property. I was ready to let him swing first, then I would bring him to within an inch of his life.

I took pics of him taking pics of me....

These were just selective stories from over the years. They were taken to court over the property line/solar panel damage, but they never showed. The bit of property in question is unusable anyway.

The police have a file about an inch thick on him - complaints and other filings, but like you said, without video or the cops actually catching him in the act, he's free

I have to change the oil, adjust a valve and put my cat back on this coming weekend. We'll see how things go. I plan on using my parents driveway.

i tried to get one neighbor to curse the witch in russian - he's fluent -- but he just yelled at her in english and parked his truck in front of her house for a month [she'd gotten the cops to ticket it, so he rotated cars for a month]

My neighbors are actually pretty decent. 6 months after moving in, I was chatting with the husband in our driveway when he remarked that he didn't know I had a motorcycle. I told him I try not to ride it early in the morning or late at night, as it's pretty loud. He responded with a smile that isn't that how they're supposed to be?

Neighbor on the other side is actually an extended Cambodian family. Must be three generations living under one roof. We chuckle when we see them reaching over the fence to our fruit trees (with a picker, no less) to pick fruit. Not that we mind. After all, they don't complain about the mess made by the fruit that falls on their side of the fence. But it's funny, nonetheless. Particularly how they have the fruit picker thingie. But they own a doughnut shop around the corner, so they brought over a dozen a few weeks ago.

Actually, the one Dave needs this weekend is my wife. Years ago, when I was living in Boston, my car kept getting keyed. I didn't know who it was, as it's a college town. We borrowed my wife's roommate's video camera and set it up. My wife actually manned it one morning. Turned out it was the old guy across the street. He didn't like the fact that I'd park my car in front of his house, so he would key my car. We caught on episode on tape and had a little chat with the detectives in the precinct down the street. They, in turn, had a little chat with the homeowner. Stuff got resolved.

dave, my mom swears that someone down the street is coming in her house and moving things around. when we try to reason with her she always has an excuse as to how they are getting in. she even left them a note, i dont remember what it said but it was quite funny. maybe this guy has the same problem my mom has?

Damn, you all have some messed up neighbors.

One next door neighbor is rarely home, pleasant when she's around, and takes very good care of her home. Other next door neighbor is absolutely perfect, a very nice family with 4 boys, one of which is about my son's age. I have many great memories of drinking beer on the deck with them as our kids played. Sadly, they've moved to a huge house in a gated community, so I have to sweat who will live there next.

Our neighbors across the street are great too, I've been to parties at their house several times. One is a hippie turned doctor who spends most of his time detailing his chopper in the driveway listening to the Doors. Sadly, he traded his NSX for the chopper. It can be annoying when he comes home at 10 PM with those loud pipes, but he's a cool guy so I don't get too worked up about it. If you can build a relationship with them, whoever they may be, the annoying stuff isn't nearly as bad.

Seems like everyone has issues with neighbors at one time or another.. dogs, college age kids partying, or some such.. too bad it's so difficult to get along but then again, it's all a matter of perspective.

I used to have a neighbor (across the street) that was always fooling around in his garage late into the night. We'd hear banging of sheet metal, grinding and occasional air tools. It didn't didn't bother me at all but, raised my curiosity as to what was going on over there?? Went over one day to see what he was up to... Blew my socks off to find the door open and a completely stripped, bear metal 911 on a rotisserie with parts scattered EVERYWHERE. Turns out the guy was not only an amazing finish carpenter by day but also a Porsche nut/wrench by night. We talked over an hour about everything he was doing (all without any help). I offered my assistance anytime he needed but he never once took me up on it. Sigh, I could have learned SO much from him.

I swear not six weeks later I heard the most wonderous sound coming from that garage! I grabbed my son and we headed right over there to find this:

Every time after that when I'd hear it fire up, I'd go to, or open the windows just to hear it better. To me it was the sound of music!

I miss that, and Chris.. he was 42 when he died from cancer. It still brings a tear just to write this.. RIP!

I'm kind of surprised at the attitude of many of the respondents to this thread, namely people condoning making a lot of noise to intentionally annoy their neighbors. Jokes about inviting friends over with loud bikes and cars to "get back" at the mean old lady who called the cops; besides the obvious immaturity of this, what about all of the other neighbors who didn't call the cops?

They all get a collateral dose of sht Harley sound just for being there?

I've been a gearhead all my life; work on my own cars, rebuilt several engines, etc., etc... Unless you live in some really rural area and have a lot of space around you, it's not fair to subject neighbors to auto repair sounds or loud pipes at any time, IMO. It's completely reasonable for people to expect not to be subjected to that kind of noise coming into their houses or for their neighbor's driveway to look like Tijuana with broken cars and tools laying around. That's just common courtesy.

It interesting to me that I live in a large, old apartment building in a big city surrounded by other big apartment bldgs. and I rarely hear loud partying sounds or barking dogs. Cars and bikes w/ really loud pipes are rare enough that I really notice them when I'm home. We are not allowed to work on cars in the parking garage, and I'm glad. It would look like the slums of Baghdad if we were. It's bad enough when people do it on the street. It just looks bad.

I'd love to have the dream house w/ huge garage/shop, but it would be insulated from neighbors somehow. Hidden, insulated, etc... The next best thing would be a separate shop in a remote location from the house. That is actually ideal. You will never find neighbors who want to hear a race car or bike run w/ open headers, even for 5 minutes. It's ear-splitting.

For lateapex, wouldn't a tiny electric winch solve your problem of loading your race car in street? How much could that cost, or rather how much could your race 911 weigh? Just seems like a logical solution.

I've quite accidentally gotten into a routine of hosting "Happy Hour at Jake's Garage" on Friday nights. It used to be a now and then thing, but for the past couple months it has become a weekly, regular gig. Usually 4-5 guys, beer, music. Some guys bring their cars by to do their oil changes etc, others bring work clothes to work on my projects, some just hand around and have a couple beer.

Anyway, I make a point of doing any loud stuff before 10... air tools, angle grinders. After that, it's wrenches and hand tools only.

Even having 4-5 guys and a few cases of beer is enough for a racket, so generally the garage door goes down at 10. If we the door is open and we get loud, my wife will usually tactfully tell us to be mindful or put the door down.

We've got a big lot and we're set up in such away that it would be hard to bother the neighbors. Only one I worry about is the nice little old bitty across the street. I made a point of talking to her son, because I know she would never tell me if we were bothering her. I just asked him to let me know if she ever complains to him.

My next door neighbor is a regular, so I don't have to worry about him at all.

FWIW, I hate seeing posts about poisoning people's barking dogs. It's not their fault... poison the owners. Poor things probably just need a walk.

Actually, the race car is more disposable than a 911...it's an old RX-7.

I have a winch, in the trailer. The issue is getting the car, which is nosed into the shop, backed up the 8' wide, 100' long, uphill drive to the street, bordered by 60' of house on one side, and a fence the entire length on the other. Then, once it's out on the street, it needs to be backed out enough to turn 90 degrees to nose into the trailer.

(Having the car backed in the shop would help, but it makes the turning issue on the street worse)

I could strap it to the truck, but pulling cars backwards is tricky, as the self centering aspect of the steering becomes self UN centering, into the fence, the house, etc.

Then there's the dicking around on the street, lining it up. And I'm single, with no help, (yes, I have a girlfriend, but merely getting away for a weekend to race is a monumental issue, having her come over to help? ha ha ha... LOL) so it's tricky. Once it's lined up with the trailer, I can winch it in.

MUCH easier...all of 30 seconds to do.... if it runs!

My neighbor called the cops on me because I parked my Range Rover slightly on the curb so that they have more room to enter their own driveway. They're the most unfriendly people in the world and refuse to even respond to hello. My roommates and I have been planning to kidnap their dog, which they seem to love more than life itself.

speeder i bought a house with a garage and blacktopped driveway because i like to USE them. crazy as it seems my garage came with several electrical outlets. i can only imagine somebody had a thought that i might want to do some work in there.

another nice feature i have discovered since moving in is that i have a hose outlet at the front of my house. how amazing that i have been provided with the utilities i need to flush my boat motor after a morning of hunting in salt water.

and i don't need to buy a house in the boonies to take advantage of those things.

i guess since popular forms of entertainment these days don't make noise that neighbors can here (texting, video games, overextending your credit, shopping on the internet, feeding a porn addiction) we have become a bunch of wimps who think the sounds of life should be a few taps on a keyboard or cellphone.

said it before and i'll say it again, if i here somebody fire up an unmuffled race car getting ready to load it up on a trailer i'm grabbing a six pack (gotta share!) and running towards the noise like a woman at a shoe sale!

Most of my neighbors are absolute jerks. The lots in our neighborhood are all 1/4 acre or slightly more. That should provide plenty of buffer around my place to allow me to shoot my magnum revolvers and centerfire rifles in the back yard. But noooo... They should all mind their own goddamn business.
