I think Milt was in college at the time and saw it when the movie first came out.

I think it was 1962, my junior year of high school. SCCA used to run road races at the Santa Barbara Airport. The course amounted to 2 long straights - front and back- with a horseshoe or carousel loop at each end.

There were many places where you could see across the track and view the cars ahead or behind you. On this particular day McQueen, driving the Cooper FJ-2-62 purchased from ken terrell and John Cooper after it had won the 1961 European Formula Junior Championship, had pulled out about a full straight lead. Approaching (see the link) top loop apex, Steve pulled to the inside of the loop, came to a complete standstill, watched and waited as the rest of the field came down the back stretch, started to enter loop and as they reached the turn apex off he went with a scant 1 car length lead. As they say, the crowd went wild ... all 20 or 30 of us.

He immediatey began to stretch out another lead and lapped all but 2 cars, as I remember. Keep in mind this was about a 25 lap race.

He was a one of a kind. Very much the progenitor of PLN but with edges a whole lot rougher and irreverent.

In honor of this thread, I have the DVD on right now while I am working... this is a really great DVD cause you can have it on, with the sound up or down...doesnt matter and you can still look up to follow the action without missing much/any of the plot!

a bit off topic: My acting coach is on Sunset in LA, and has been teaching there since the early 60s... he is really a great coach and has worked with lots of big names over the years... we got to talking about McQueen, and he said that one time in the late 60s, McQueen and another guy popped in unannounced in to one of his night classes and asked if they could 'work in' and do some scenes.... my coach said 'sure, if you let me direct you'...so they did and my coach said he was really great...and all the women in the class had wet panties that night with McQueen there.

when we had some English soccer coaches staying at our home in H.S. they taught me that the gesture was an insult similar to giving the finger--accented by stating "two for you" while performing said gesture.
