Goodbye Woolworths

A sad moment. The venerable retail chain Woolworths is shutting down. Its 800 stores and 30,000 employees wil be gone shortly after Christmas.

I mean in the UK, of course. The US Woolworths that some of us remember from our youth, is long gone. The business continues (sort of) as Footlocker.

Any other businesses that have gone, or are in the process of going, that you miss, or will miss?

Definitely going to miss GM. But I hear the new stuff from Congressional Motors is going to be dynamite.

I remember Woolworths as a kid, mostly remember it because they had a pet section, with fish, birds, etc. I loved that as a kid, and got a few parakeets there over the years. Talk about old school! Although they went for quite a while, I remember my my graduate school suitemates and I got a parakeet at a Woolworths, and that was in the late 80s.

Very sad... both for me and for the little one.. .it is his favourite store.
He knows that getting Dad to go in will mean Dad buys another new Ferrari, or Porsche, or a Veyron...

or other nice 1/87th scale Hot Wheels. Of course once home and opened the afore mentionned car ends up in his toy box... by mistake naturally.

I remember as a kid going to the diner at Woolworths at the local mall(the first enclosed mall in Jacksonville) for lunch with my Grandmother. Locally, Woolworths closed well before wallyworld came in.

I loved the Woolworths in Spokane. They closed about 20 years ago, along with all the other U.S. stores. Before they closed, I bought a package of small Christmas ornaments. The ornaments were made in China, even then..

The local Woolworths here in South Africa is very strong. I don't think there is any ownership link with WW in the UK other than perhaps the branding. Here, they have a different profile, being much more like Marks & Spencer than the UK Woolworths, very upmarket clothing stores and premium food stores. They have a good market share here.

Other that are history or have been morphed out of recognition:

Montgomery Wards

Sears hasn't been doing so well lately; I wonder if it will last another five years?

Woolworths is an Australian company that is not related to the US Woolworths. My niece works for them in Perth.

As someone already pointed out, the US woolworths completely changed their business and survive today as Footlocker.

I thought Sears was bought up by K-Mart just after they came out of bankruptcy.

I very vaguely remember WW as a young kid. I think Zayres moved in afterwords, followed by Ames. All of which are long gone now.
