Nope, sorry, all of you are wrong.
Those are bad, but wait 'til you hear a fart can on a THREE CYLINDER. I saw one on a Geo Metro, and the weird firing pattern makes it vibrate and rattle like the death bleats of a yak.

It's a toss-up for me between the ricers with their fart-can mufflers that sound like angry bees or the wankers in their 5Liter Mustangs...

There is some clown up here in the north Lynnwood/south Everett area with a Dodge diesel truck. This thing is covered with "so and so's diesel performance" stickers. It's a shortbox that has been tubbed to the point that I don't think you could slide a 2x4 into the bed between the wheel wells. The kicker is the exhaust stack - straight up behind the cab, like a semi truck, but inside the bed. I swear if you put a backboard on it you could shoot hoops into it. He has his bracket racing dial-in time permanently stickered in the window - somewhere in the high 9's. No kidding - in a diesel truck. Pretty darn impressive. But the sound that thing makes when he gets on it, and the absolutely billowing clouds of thick black smoke are something to behold. Unbelievable that he can drive that goddamn thing on a public road. It sounds like a turbocharged wood chipper chewing up old railroad ties. Just plain ear piercing.

Not an engine, but the sound of a Ducati idling in neutral with the clutch out.

The hideous bleating death knell of a Motor Meister engine in full oil barfing glory followed by the excruciating sucking sound of my very empty wallet...

The sound my dirt bike made in Sept. when it was starved for oil and then died due to a plugged screen in the bottom of the frame tube. Was on a 10 mile climb from 2,500 st. to 6,000 and had two more ridges to cross.
Somehow, I made it the other 30 miles home by taking frequent breaks, riding slow and coasting a lot.....Got home, drained about 1/2 cup of oil out of the engine, the rest was still in the tank (frame)....Cleaned the screen, switched to synthetic oil and it runs great now...

Maybe not the worst engine sound in the world, but I've noticed that Subie flat-4s with aftermarket exhausts sound like they're farting.

When I went through Porsche Perfection Paranoia a few years back, I had this really nice 89 928 with a driveline rattle, that sounded like ? throwout bearing, clutch, CV joint, torque tube, ? Couldn't trace it, but it turned out to be a loose bushing in the shift lever.
Turns out that the Hammer of the Gods is actually a car built by men. And not a new Lexus either... Man, I thought I was going NUTS !!! Turns out I already was... ![]() |

The sound I hated most was of me crying when I used to write the checks to repair the RR.

I'm sure I'll be thrown under the bus for saying this, but I really don't dig the sound of a Suby WRX when an "aftermarket" exhaust is used! Sounds like a very deep fart! UUGGHHH...NO GOOD! I like the car and can appreciate it's performance, but...
Agree with the others about open pipe Harleys and 4-banger ricers with coffee cans strapped to their arses.

Is it OK on a car? I have to admit I love the sound of an unmuffled turbodiesel. I lost the muffler on my e300d for a couple weeks, and you'd barely notice the difference. Just a nice rumble at idle, and you'd hear the turbo when accelerating.

Man, I think I'm in the minority. There are some 4-cyl engine that sound nice; mostly depends on the quality of exhaust used, IMO. This goes for subies, but not so much Hondas.
I think its more of a turbo-4 thing that I like. I can't stand the exhaust-less diesel, though. There's one here at work, and even at partial throttle you can't hear yourself.
