Honda Dropping the S2000

I heard on the news today that Honda is dropping the S2000. Do you think that will mean more Boxster sales?

I thought they were developing a replacement S3000. It was in a few magazines this summer.

Me too...rumored to have more power, and more importantly, more torque.

Yes, the torque will be welcomed. Later generations smartly sacrificed the upper end RPMs for the additional torque. Who needs a car that redlines over 8000 RPMS with a lawnmowers torque until 5000 RPM?

Seriously though, I am shopping an S2000 for my next weekend sporty car.

I test-drove the S2K when I was car shopping (ended up buying the M.B. SLK320). Not bad. Felt fine and reasonably tight, but the lack of torque was simply maddening. It would have been horrible as a daily driver because you'd have everyone and their brother getting the jump on you from lights and in traffic and then cutting you off because you had nothing to fight back with. Seriously, I've driven minivans and pickup trucks that accelerated faster.

I will admit once it was wound up it came alive and was quite fun but I also can't see driving it like that on a regular basis without looking/sounding like a complete boy-racer idiot.

I agree, would be an excellent car if it could drop the first 5000 RPMs. My friend is a Civic SI guy, great cars with similar engines, but useless in the city where we live.

I find is amusing to hear complaints of torque from the 911 crowd. If this was the Buick Grand National board, I'd understand. I always thought the S2000 was marketed wrong. It is a really capable car and would be my choice for a cab if I was ever in the market for one. (Plus I don't fit in one, but thats another story).

A guy in L.A. wanted to trade me his S2000 for my 911.

Hmmm...

step back, slowly. your 911 is friggen bad arse. the insanity.

i love the S2000, but he car is a total one hit wonder. it would be a great commuter here with the HOV lanes, but one trip to home depot would be a bummer.

Exactly what I was thinking !!!

My car doesn't even come alive until 4500 rpms, and then it just glorious I drove an early S2000, and even though it's lacking in torque, the engine revs so freely, that before you know, you're in the power band and up to 7000 rpm. Similar to the RX8, it's so hard to drive at those rpms, just feels so unnatural to have the engine screaming away!

It's a shame to see the S2000 go, I don't think it'll change the Boxster sales that much, if any - are they really seen as competitors? I see the Boxster's main competition from the BMW Z4 and SLK.

I had a Grand National, the lack of torque was quickly and massively overcome at about 2800rpm.

Those are seriously bad-ass cars.

PS: The Saturn Sky and dodge viper are both also being canceled.
