Anyone out there with too much work?
I ask those of you with ample workload-- how did you get there? Are you happy? Advice for others that are underemployed or unemployed?
I'd admit to being chronically over-employed. It has it's ups and downs. |

I work in corporate restructuring... we'll just starting to ramp up and most of us are at 100+% utilization.

I'm in the construction plumbing business in NYC. Right now we are still going great guns.
We have hired three new project managers and field supers. Currently have a staff of about 100 plumbers, steamfitters, drivers and office staff. We do public works, city state and federal work. We are very busy. Thankfully we have banked 5 contracts that extend out for the next 3 years in our pockets, all federally funded. Hopefully Mr. Obama's "stimulus" trickles down to our industry here in NYC. Just my 2¢

Yes, and by hard work, why other people were whining about no work, I was working late, looking for ways to keep building & keep our people working.

I saw this mess coming well over a year out. I sold my 911 and put my vacation home for sale. Both are gone, lots of money in the bank and no real bills.
I changed my lifestyle a lot so I do not need as much money anymore then I adjusted my company to make it through this tough time, I basically took my business model of 1996 when I was first starting out. So now its just me and 1 other, I am VERY busy, but way off in terms of earnings. My business was doing close to 2 mil in gross revenue and now I will be lucky to hit 250K. So yes, I am busy, some days I have more work than I can handle but we go like madmen and put in very long days in order to keep up. I am working more for less but that is fine, considering the landscape right now I am happy where I am at. I still have my RX7 and that fills my need for speed just fine. Someday on the other side of this I will get another Porsche. I actually e-mailed the guy that bought my 911 and told him to give me dibs on it if he decides to sell it. ![]()

Ha, Ha; gotta love it 'eh! I've always said to everyone I work with, "if your only complaint is that you're too busy, well then, you've got no complaint at all!" The flip side of being too busy is much worse.... so always be happy with too busy!
Some days for me are better than others. Some days I feel like I'm gonna get pulled in 20 different directions? Like the month I sold 30 homes; averaged one sale per day that month (August/07) and that included listing, showing, writing, closing & completing. But I was happy, frantically happy. I am still extremely busy; but not too many 'urgent' matters. My home builder calls me several times a day with questions and details; lots of details! The real estate business is a 'jump now' work environment, but no two days are the same. I'm also ramping up three other developments, which are at various stages; no panic, but you have to keep them moving along or you fall behind. Started my pilots course now too; so I give that some daily attention and in the Spring I'll be dedicating some full days to flying. What I do is look for opportunity; I've spent my life getting prepared for it and "Success = Opportunity + Preparedness". I want multiple income streams, so that takes effort; I'm willing to put in the effort because I want the results. Not necessarily a truth, but funny how the harder I work, the luckier I get? Cheers, |

Yeah. I have to rebuild a sales territory. A major chain took a dive in the fall (Tweeter) & that cost me 30 storefronts (and big revenues). Those storefronts had also prohibited some lines from prospering with the independent dealers. Now I have to revisit all of them & a bunch of ‘new market’ dealers to attempt to squeeze business out of a dangerously declining retail marketplace.
We do have some product bright spots (hot products + new product lines) as well as a placement in Apple stores (and on-line) with one product. I have been holding off on travel until this jelled & the Christmas clearances dissipated, but now I must hit the road. So if you are in the southeast & you see some rent-a-bomb scream by with some wild-haired sales-type driver (no tie ever though) eating a Wendy’s Big Bacon Classic, smokin’ a cigarette & seemingly talking to his TomTom, that would be me. Coming soon to a town near you. Ian

I work on contract research, and I have not been very busy the past two months. Now, I have two contracts starting at the same time, me playing all the roles from the tech to the supervisor of myself, doing the experiments and reporting, etc ...I cannot hire any help because there is not enough funding in the contracts. Also, we got noticed that all the govt agencies are getting more funds from the stimulus package, so now is the time to write proposals too. I may have to spend longer days to get all that done. I am grateful to still have a job, but I hate having to multitask...

Picking up we've got about 10 TV pilots starting soon and about 6 features. They just announced that we're doing a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea!!

We are trying to wade through a brutal backlog. Have actually turned-away or delayed work several times. I would sure have it this way than the opposite though...BTDT. I've hired a number of people in the last few months but am trying to stay on the cautious side as I'd rather overwork the current team than staff-up too quickly and have to lay off some good people if things slow-down later. Finding the right balance is a b!tch.
