Twist drill, new invention

Anybody ever hear of a twist drill? I went into the hardware store to procure a 29/64 twist drill bit. I ask the attendant in the tool section where the "twist drill bits" are. He said that he has never heard of a twist drill. He asks if that's the kind with the little "thinggys" going down the side while proceeding to use his hands in a downward spiral motion. I said "you work in a hardware store and you don't know what a twist drill bit is?". I find them on my own. He is working at a separate register in the tool section. I go up to him to pay for the bit and he says that he can't check me out because they are taking customers from the other main check out lines first which are about 75 feet away and none of those customers where even looking over towards his counter. I said," here, keep your twist drill, knuckle head" and walked out. mad: My gosh, between the idiots running the country and the numbskulls in the general population, things aren't looking to rosey for the good ole USA.

Going to the High School to pick up my Son, there we two kids holding up a pair of jumper cables and the car hoods open. They asked me if I knew how to use these. I just shook my head and said "I hope we never go to war" This was years ago!

why confuse the kid? didnt know there was a special name for the standard drill bit. just ask him where the drill bits are....

Sent one of my guys to Guitar Center to get some gear.

Told him to pick me up a new set of "cans" for a VO session

I go for lunch, come back to my desk and I have voice mails.

"hey, it's Jack, I been looking for cans for 30 minutes, asked a guy here and he does not think they carry them, what should I do?'

next voice mail

"hey, I got your "cans", we asked some "old guy" in the back and he knew what they were"

if he wasn't the most talented editor I had would have fired him on the spot, "old guy"

That was part of the problem, he was no kid, at least 35 years old. I found the spade bits, the forstners, hammer drill bits , masonry, TIN coated , cobalt, the brad point, etc. All I wanted was the HSS, jobber length, 135 degree point standard drill bit. They actually didn't have those, the closest thing was a cobalt bit in that size. I didn't tell the whole story the first time, all of this occurred after I asked him twice about the bits but he couldn't hear me due to the blue tooth in his ear. And I've never been accused of being soft spoken.

I'm 38. If you asked me for "twist drill bits", I wouldn't have known that they were just normal bits. I'd have thought that they might be, but since you asked in an unusual way, I'd have thought that you were asking about something unusual.

Of course, I don't work in a hardware store either. But I don't expect people who work in stores to actually know anything about what they are selling. I generally assume that they don't and occasionally I'm pleasantly surprised.

If you'd have asked for "regular drill bits" or "HSS 135 degree drill bits", then I'd have known. I suspect my grandfather would have known what you meant by "twist drill bit".

I might have wondered if you were talking about an auger bit.

Yeah, the blue tooth in his ear would have been irritating.

Me too Puff. Honestly I am young and never have heard of a twist drill. Now all the other terms mentioned I am no stranger too. My dad probably has a bigger collection of bits than the local hardware store. Including anular cutters

Many people apply nicknames for tools instead of their real name (e.g. "Channel locks" insead of slip-joint pliers; "Crescent wrench" instead of adjustable wrench, etc.), but the key word, "drill" should have been a clue for the salesperson to direct you to the section of the store where the "drills" are.

The kid either didn't receive enough basic training or hasn't restocked the shelves yet. He's probably the owner's son.

There are no more high school shop classes that why. this very same reason why I am there banging my head against the wall 3 hours a day. Every new school that are opening up around LA have no elective classes lilke shops. they just do not exist. Not even architecture. Most people don't know how to read a simple drawing or read a tape measure. racism and saving the earth is all they talk about.
