If we could just turn the tables a little and say THIS country is having the pandemic, maybe it would keep all the "illegals" home, in Mexico. THAT might help the unemployment problem.

At this time you could offer me a free Mexican vacation and $20,000 spending money, and I'd turn it down.

Quite the opposite. If this gets bad enough in Mexico, I have no doubt we'll start some sort of special refugee program to let them come here en masse.

When do the zombies come?

one thing for sure... i am throwing politeness out the window if i see someone not washing hands after the toilet visit. if they dont wash there, they never do.

and if i see someone sneezing or feverish at work, i am getting pissed. my hands will smell of soap 24/7. hehehe.

Of the hours of blather in TV - I saw only one person make this very good point.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City: "If you are sick, stay home".

That bares repeating..

Just an update -

Mexico confirmed: 26 hospitalized cases, 7 deaths. Mexico suspected: Appx 2000 hospitalized cases, 152 deaths. The problem is that only two labs in Mexico can identify the virus, so they don't know how many cases they have had. Without knowing what the denominator is, they don't know the death rate.

Outside of Mexico, the confirmed swine flu cases have been fairly mild cases, almost all treated outpatient, no deaths.

US 50 [edit: now 64] cases (mostly NY, also CA TX OH KS)
Canada 6 cases
Scotland 6 cases
Spain 2 case
NZ 11 cases
Israel 1 case
France suspected cases

This virus is not resistant to Tamiflu. Tamiflu is reportedly in ample supply, because the flu strain this past winter was not a severe one and was resistant to Tamiflu, hence not much Tamiflu was used. The virus is also not resistant to Relenza.

There is not a vaccine for swine flu, yet, and it takes several months to make one.

The concern is that the swine flu virus could turn into something more lethal as it spreads or in future years.

At some level, the CDC plans call for travel restrictions, discouraging public gatherings, and asking people to stay home. Apparently they are still far from making those recommendations.

Hmm - if I have to work from home for a couple weeks, I won't be unhappy. The kids will be delighted if their school is closed. But not so great for the economy.

I would treat this the same as the bird flu that was supposed to cause armageddon a few years ago. Just see what happens here, nothing to change your life about right now.

jyl 04-28-2009 02:25 PM

No! I want to work from home! Cough cough.

I know I won't be eating out until this is gone. If I didn't eat out ever, that would be fine with me.

First case in Philly reported today.

If this thing really takes off in Mexico as some experts are predicting, there may be lots of folks trying to get away from it. Running for their lives so to speak.

Where do ya suppose they might try to go? Would it be wrong to keep them out of this country knowing that might be condeming many of them, even if it meant controlling the spread here?
Lots of moral implications I personally hope none of us have to face. I think I know what I would do, but I'm not sure I'd be ready to live with it.
Sounds too much like a cheap science fiction show anyway.

I'm praying it will not get to be as big of a deal as they are predicting it could.

The guy that sits next to me considers his trip to Cancun in two weeks essential because he already paid for it.

What do I do when he gets back?

Hose him down with Bleach from a safe distance.

jeffgrant 04-28-2009 04:52 PM

There's also some thought that THIS may be the flu to contract, in order to prepare your immune system for the next one.

Speaking of getting pissed.... I hate it when some of our customers that have stayed home "because they are too sick to go to work.... think its OK to come into the shop for a social visit." We have no problem showing them the door and saying "come on back when you are feeling better" , then we all promptly wash our hands.
Should be interesting to see how this new strain plays out.
