I stopped at Kompact Kar Korner to look at a '78 930 about 15 years ago. As I was looking, a sales guy comes up and says, "Wanna drive it"? We get about a half mile from the dealership and the sales guy spots another of their cars, a Corvette, on a test drive and says, "Let's show 'em what this thing can do". Well, you don't have to tell me twice to jump on a Turbo. We passed the Vette like he was standing still at well over a buck on Hwy 99 through Lynnwood. Best freakin' test drive ever! I wish I'd bought that car...but then, I probably wouldn't be alive to share this.

That said, their cars seem to be way overpriced.

That said, when I was shopping for a Cobra replica I stopped there to see if they had any in stock. This was probably 10 years ago, and they didn't have any Cobras, but they did have a really nice Hertz Shelby GT350. They were asking $35K for it, but it was an automatic. Around this same time I also passed on a cherry '69 Z/28 for $15K (I don't remember why). I ended up buying a Unique 427 Cobra for $28K and thought I got a great deal. When I sold the Cobra 3 years ago, I got $30K. I know there's a lesson in there somewhere, but I can't figure it out.

Actually, you could get a '65 Impala with the 396. They brought the 396 out to replace the 409.

In '65 you could get a 425hp 396 or a 409hp 409 in an Impala.

Quote:
The 396-cubic-inch (6.5 L) V8 was introduced in the 1965 Corvette as the L78 option and in the Z16 Chevelle. It had a bore of 4.094 in and stroke of 3.76 in (104 mm by 96 mm), and produced 425 hp (317 kW) and 415 ft·lbf (563 N·m). This version of the 396 was equipped with four bolt main bearing caps and was very comfortable with being operated in the upper 6000 rpm range.

Introduced in 1970, the 402-cubic-inch (6.6 L) was a 396-cubic-inch bored out by 0.030 in (0.8 mm). Despite the fact that it was 6 cubic inches (98 cc) larger, Chevy continued marketing it under the popular "396" label in the smaller models, and as the "Turbo-Jet 400" in the full-size series.

Used in:

* 1965 Chevrolet Corvette
* 1965–1972 Chevrolet Chevelle
* 1967–1972 Chevrolet Camaro
* 1968–1970 Chevrolet Nova
* 1970–1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
* 1965–1972 Chevrolet Biscayne, Chevrolet Bel Air, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Impala SS, Chevrolet Caprice

Kind of a hijack but - what is the realistic potential HP, as we measure it today, from an old style V8? Those 1960s V8 engines like the 396 mentioned wouldn't be rated today at 425HP, would they.

And, suppose you built a NA American pushrod V8 with all the modern technology you could. Fuel injection, engine management computer, sensors, etc - plus every old school hotrod trick. How much HP could you get and still be reliable (so, not a short life race motor)?

A 60s rated 425hp motor that was re-rated at SAE net with an A/T would probably put out about 275hp or thereabouts.

a 6-5 Impala makes me think of this...

Woke up quick at about noon
Just thought that I had to be in Compton soon
I gotta get drunk before the day begins
Before my mother starts *****in' about my friends
About to go and damn near went blind
Young niggaz on the block throwin' up gang signs
I went in the house to get the clip
With my Mac 10 on the side of my hip
I bailed outside and I pointed my weapon
Just as I thought the fools kept steppin'
I jumped in the fo' hit the juice on my ride
I got front and back, side to side
Then I let the Alpine play
I was bumpin new **** by NWA
It was "Gangsta Gangsta" at the top of the list
Then I played my own ****, it went somethin' like this:
Cruisin down the street in my six-fo'
Jockin' the *****es, slappin the ho's
I went to the park to get the scoop
Knuckleheads out there cold shootin' some hoop
A car pulls up, who can it be?
A fresh El Camino rollin', Kilo G
He rolls down the window and he starts to say
It's all about makin that GTA
Cuz the boyz n tha hood are always hard
Come talkin that trash and we'll pull your card
Knowin nothin' in life but to be legit
Don't quote me boy, I ain't said ****
Bored as hell and I wanna get ill
So I go to a place where my homeboys chill
Fellas out there, tryin to make that dollah
I pulled up in the 6-4 Impala
Greeted with a 40 and I start drinkin
And from the 8-ball my breath start stinkin'
I gotta get my girl to rock that body
Before I left I hit the Bacardi
Pulled to the house, get her out of the pad
And the ***** said something to make me mad
She said somethin' that I couldn't believe
So I grabbed the stupid ***** by her nappy ass weave
Started talkin' ****, wouldn't you know?
I reached back like a pimp and I slapped the ho
And her father stood up and he started to shout
So I threw a right-cross and knocked his ol' ass out
Cuz the boyz n tha hood are always hard
Come talkin that trash and we'll pull your card
Knowin nothin in life but to be legit
Don't quote me boy, I ain't said ****
Punk-ass trippin, but it's alright
Homey scored a kee, he's gonna fly
Punk-ass fly

OK, this

And this

are very different. The '65 looks fast just standing still. The '64 looks like a box and wouldn't look fast going 150.

'62-64, blech and prefered by gangstas and lowriders everywhere.

I stand corrected

I think you just described the LSX V8s in the new Camaro, Pontiac G8, and Corvette. If that's the case, it appears that 450-500 HP is pretty easy.

Thank God for that. A ghetto special, $1k worth of car rolling on $3k worth of rims. But hey, at least it looks really stupid.

Monte Carlos are the ones that kill me. To think that there was date, place and time in this universe that a human being thought, "Hey, that car looks great!", well thats disturbing.

Exhibit A.

Buying "classics" like this, the US car buyer only has itself to blame for the demise of GM. They sold gazillions and thought that's what we wanted..... forever. And they kept on trying.
