Me too, though the college courses were torture. Once I saw a good use for it 7 years out of college I fell in love with it. Did the black belt thing, twice actually as our org changed and all of 'last year's flavor' got ignored.

I love to focus on all of the assumptions that have to be made, and to understand how that changes the answer (or at least the significance thereof). Yeah, nerd here...

depend on the major, well maybe location too I am not sure about this. I remember the statistic from math and engineering was the toughest I had. I just couldn't get the idea around the 1/2 half semester. But statistic with business was more simple.

How many of you use statistics in the real world?

I did Pure Math and Statistics in school and although I enjoy math I though it was such a pointless class, couldn't ever see I'd need half of it.

Last week my wife called me at work from her work. She had a set of measurements from a number of samples that had been taken off a piece of equipment and needed to demonstrate to her boss that the equipment they were using wasn't up to scratch. I explained how to calculate standard deviation of her data and then how to compare standard deviation to the mean with the coefficient of variation. If she did this with her data and then compared that to similar results from another machine she would be able to demonstrate the deficiencies in the equipment. It was exactly what she needed.

It's very rare I ever need to apply statistics but useful to know it when you do.

My one take away from the Statistics class I took as an undergrad was "more livers and kidneys were destroyed by good manners than bad liquor."

As I recall, this was said within the context of someone asking to be excused for a bio break. Words to live by.

Pulled off a B in a course that was supposed to be "Applied Engineering Statistics" but was taught by a visiting professor from a non-engineering background who didn't speak english and thought the class was more of a "Statistical Theory" class...

I didn't wrap my head around a lot of it.

I can generate things in MiniTab and Excel pretty well. ANOVAs, MANOVAs, DOE, etc.. That's all you should need to be able to do to get by in what should be applied statistics.

Proofs and theory.. man... I need a drink just thinking about that class.

Mini-tab and Excel...hah!

I used both at GE, Caterpiller/Solar and Cooper Cameron in past 10 years, but in college, those were a distant glimmer. Everything was by hand with maybe a standard calculator.

I would like to have Mini-tab again, but I'm not shelling out the cash for something I use a few times a year. I make due with Excel.
