Goodbye Hawaii, hello California!

Well, I just arrived here in Monterey last night. Man I love this place, it's my life goal to retire here. I can't wait to drive along the coast through big sur and head down to Laguna Seca. It's a shame rent is so pricey.

Don't forget to take a drive up the coast north - some day. It's absolutely beautiful and considerably different from the South. Much colder and more rugged but the redwood forests are stunning.

Thanks for the reminder! That's definitely something I'd love to do, I always wanted to see the huge redwood forests.

And for dinner tonight I think I'll head down to fisherman's wharf and see if that awesome crepe restaurant is still open. Even if you took away all the scenery, the variety of cultures, and all the other great aspects of the monterey peninsula, I think I'd still love this place just for the great food.

Yeah, I believe there's a moto GP race going on today. Unfortunately, I just got here, so I still have to wait another 3 weeks until my car gets here, so I have no transportation. Renting a car is too expensive for anything other than a day or so. I'm definitely going to see some moto GP before I leave here though. Last time I was here I saw some CART racing at laguna seca, fantastic stuff.

Why'd you leave Hawaii to come to Cali? I would think for most, it would be the other way around.

I figured for most, it wouldn't even be on the plate. I still think that the USSA should auction that piece of unreal estate off before it falls into the pacific.

They can't auction what they don't own. Half of it already belongs to the Mexicans and the other half already belongs to the Chinese.

Go to the Municipal Wharf—one over from Fisherman's Wharf, and eat at the Sandbar & Grill. Great and reasonable seafood. It's where the locals eat. And of course it featured in Play Misty For Me—which you should in any case rent while you're there.

I just walked down to fisherman's wharf last night. I'll have to check that place out, thanks. I've heard good things about it.

dd74 - California may have it's share of problems, but I still love Monterey. I've lived all over and Monterey is by far my favorite place to live.

bell - he's stationed the same place as me, the Presidio of Monterey, aka DLI. He's right, there is something awesome going on every single weekend. I grabbed a thick stack of "things to do" brochures the night I arrived here, and I plan on doing everything in them. Wine tasting, whale watching, salmon fishing, more wine tasting, sampling all the fantastic food here, horseback riding on the beach, kayaking, even more wine tasting, some antique shopping, and everything else that pops up my way. Maybe some wine tasting, too.

Wow! Think of all the nice patio decks just those two trees could make!

My favorite SF seafood restaurant, listed in the top 10 seafood restaurants in SF - I eat there at least once whenever I go to SF since the late 60s, shortly after they first opened (was recommended by a local): http://www.scomas.com/

Have some very good memories of the DLI back in the 70's. You will have a good time there, and soak up the new language.

I was here about 3-4 years ago and learned Korean, and I had a blast. Looking back though, there's so many things I didn't do that I should have, so I've told myself that I'm going to do all the fun stuff this time 'round. Today I went for a walk down to fisherman's wharf and cannery row and enjoyed some wine tasting and a glass bottom boat ride. I've never been wine tasting before, it was nice. I think tomorrow I'll go whale watching and maybe kayaking.

Well, duh.

I'd live in Pacific Grove if I could afford even a trailer. I found a small group of trailers right next to the ocean in PG. I'll bet those are affordable, huh?
