Corvette ZR-1 3.3 0 to 60

I think I saw one of these on the road yesterday. I'm not a Corvette fan but I noticed something a bit odd about it. It didn't look like a Z06, though.<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yQaas5NbIlw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yQaas5NbIlw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The car has brakes from a Ferrari FXX. Is that a bit odd considering that Corvette race teams run in the American LeMans series against the Ferrari?

legion 07-18-2009 09:50 AM

Was there a link or picture?

That's okay, Ferrari has been using the shocks from Corvettes for years....

pwd72s 07-18-2009 10:55 AM

Hey, they're damned fast...

Now let the flamers enter...all spouting nonsense about Porsche's superior quality, "soul", and other intangibles. Bottom line, this 'Vette will smoke any Porsche street legal car made today.

Jim Richards 07-18-2009 11:08 AM

Pretty impressive car.

Paul, you seem to be the flamer here. Whassup?

Just anticipating...I've read it here before whenever somebody posts about a fast Corvette...the "sure it's fast, BUT...." comments.

masraum 07-18-2009 11:16 AM

I'd love a chance to drive that thing. Impressive numbers.

Granted, my experience is limited. The most impressive car that I've driven is my old '88 Carrera. Based on my limited experience, if I had the choice of owning a new GT3 or a new Z06, I'd want the GT3.

Yeah, I've got the chest hair to pull off 'Vette ownership. I don't have the big gold medallion necklace though.

Hmm, let me try to head some off at the pass. Don't they use the same suspension as an old horse cart? Hey, they are the same as a Cobalt inside!

Well, I'm sure there are reasons that they are so cheap relatively, but I think the new engines, even though they are a small block Chevy, aren't as low tech as that would imply. Aren't they full dry sump plus a bunch of other racecar/high end sports technology.

Embraer 07-18-2009 11:20 AM

Absolutely sick. Top Gear did a GREAT segment on this badboy. I'm not a Corvette fan, but I would definitely own one of those...

Oh Haha 07-18-2009 11:21 AM

I didn't post this to dog on Corvettes. I just thought it is a cool car. My new job takes me to the area where GM/Chrysler/Ford test cars so my head has been on a swivel all week, just taking in the scenery.

The area is also known as being one of the wealthiest counties in the country so it's a whole new world for me.:D

Porsche-O-Phile 07-18-2009 12:39 PM

Impressive, but no way I'd buy a Government Motors/UAW car - I don't care how good the numbers are.

450knotOffice 07-18-2009 01:11 PM

I'd love to drive that ZR1! We saw two of them today at Cars & Coffee (along with three Carrera GT's, btw). Who can fail to be impressed by that monster?

Paul, Jeezus man. Who the heck pissed in your cheerios? It seems you rarely have anything nice to say anymore.

lm6y 07-18-2009 01:21 PM

I think Paul is right on the money. Had he not said anything, this thread would have been full of people knocking the Corvette.

Hang in there Paul, I've noticed it too.

Finally a legit reason! :D

Well, the fact that you're posting it on the OT section of the largest Porsche board on the planet might have something to do with those types of comments.

Maybe you'd be happier on a Corvette board?

Nope. Never had a corvette. Cindy refuses to bleach her hair & get a boob job. I have owned Porsches.
:D

Oh Haha 07-18-2009 01:40 PM

Paul didn't post it. I did.

If you don't like the post, don't ******* comment on it. Jesus H. Christ!

You are flaming anticipated flamers, do I have that right?

More to the point, why do you care that folks in a Porsche forum would rib a Corvette? It's like posting info on the new Yankees pitcher in a Red Sox forum and getting upset when they tear him down.

For the record, looks like a mighty impressive car. Some of the styling cues are a little cartoonish, but the mechanicals are stunning.

I wonder what else in the $100K range buys you?

Nothing that can keep up, that's for sure.

I'd love to know if a $50K Cayman with $50 in mods would. Or a $50K 993TT with $50K in mods.

Yes, the Corvette has incredible numbers, but if I had the money, could I stomach the styling? Not really.

Car guys here have been pretty supportive of the C6-generation Corvettes, well, except for some ribbing of the Corvette-owner stereotype. I guess some of you guys have thin skin for Corvette comments. Kinda funny seeing this kind of thing on a Porsche forum. ;)

lm6y 07-18-2009 02:20 PM

No thin skin at all Jim. I personally don't like Corvettes. If someone posts about a car that can hand a P-Car it's ass, it turns into a witch hunt. I just don't get it.

carnutzzz 07-18-2009 02:58 PM

I'd like to see MT or any other mag bolt some drag slicks on the back and have another go at 0-60 and 1/4 mile. I bet high 2's and 10's is possible respectively.

Unreal.

450knotOffice 07-18-2009 03:04 PM

Ever been to a Corvette or Mustang or Viper forum? If somebody mentions the word Porsche in one of those forums, it becomes a rabid hate fest. Much worse than in here, imo.

Personally, I really like the ZR1 and Z06 Corvettes. I have a great deal of respect for the cars' capabilities, having seen them out at Willow Springs. However, I don't aspire to own one. So what?

The engines arent a small block chevy. They stopped making that engine with the birth of the early 90s LT-1 motor IIRC.

I bet you're probably right. With slicks that Vette is probably not too far from NHRA mandatory parachute territory.

Really with it's numbers, you have to say the new ZR1 is one of the greatest, fastest sports cars of all time, regardless of price.

Jim Bremner 07-18-2009 07:32 PM

Porsche wanter with my heart

Corvette owner with my brain.

C6 with the track pack

and no, the corvette forums are far less pompus on the Porsche!

450knotOffice 07-18-2009 08:39 PM

Really?! That's not been my experience. Create a thread on the Corvette forum you frequent titled something like "Have you seen how fast the Porsche GT2 is at the track?" and then tell us how it progresses. I highly doubt you'll see anyone espousing the virtues of the Porsche. I'm guessing it'll go the other way, along with Porsche drivers being bashed as pricks. Try it.

Well let's see what happens. AND I baited them.

pwd72s 07-18-2009 10:17 PM

Jim, you're running the risk of proving yourself right here...;)

trekkor 07-18-2009 11:16 PM

I've ridden in well driven 'Vette on track. Awesome.

I'd definitely drive one.

Corvettes are just not my style. But they're excellent sports cars. A good value as well. But they certainly have an image problem.

Jim Bremner 07-18-2009 11:21 PM

1 corvette guy so far has said that he would want one.

0 bashes so far.

Oh the bashing is starting albeit slow.

I know it's not corvette content and occasionaly the P-Car posts get heated but I had to share.
Apparently it can get dicey over there.

Sonic dB 07-19-2009 02:58 AM

i dont know...to me its not all about speed... i drove the last version of the Corvette, a new model in 06 and while it was kick in the pants fast on a straight line, I found my self very twitchy with the loose steering, loose feel, and longer hood which limited visibility compared to my 993... just didnt handle or feel nearly as well as the 993. Have they improved on this with this Z1 or is it just fast with great brakes?

Jim Bremner 07-19-2009 07:05 AM

Sonic, the hoods just as long, caster can help the twitchyness and all '08 and above che'vettes have a new sterring rack.

Plus you drove a car with the stock runflats?

Only among porsche owners.

futuresoptions 07-19-2009 09:08 AM

If they would only borrow the engine placement from Ferrari, I think that they would have a winner....;)

It's placement is about the same as the 599 or 612, the top of the current line up
