Text messaging idiocy

Aside from the usual 'girls text questions, guys text answers' texting stupidity,

What's your texting pet peeve?

I'll start:

A buddy I'm working with next weekend texted me

"We should talk on the phone about this."

So, I called him. He answers the phone. Why didn't he just . . . . you know . . . .call me?

Actually what he did was left you the equivalent of a voicemail or email.

He was being considerate by sending you a text that you could respond to when it was convenient to you.

I often do the same thing.

Passed a new Beetle on I-5...glanced over. Idiot driver was very close to the ass end of a truck, texting. Watched my mirror, no mayhem visible, but the fool damned near killed himself.

No texting here. I have text features disabled on my account. It is a freaking phone. If you want to exchange information with me make a phone call. It takes me forever to enter a new phone number. It would take me 5 minutes to do what a 10 second phone call can do.

I will have texting for free on my new phone. Actually, I guess I have it now, but I don't yet have a qwerty key feature. To text with 10 keys seems insanely inefficient. To leave a brief message that the recipient does not have to access thru VM and then listen seems OK. I might do a few if if seems appropriate.

I receive texts, but I call back. It's not my preferred method of communication.

I like it because it's surreptitious. When you call, you run the risk of inconveniencing someone. With a text, they can respond when it's convenient.

As such, I use the phone for higher priority communication.

But yeah, it's overdone in our society - same complaints as people yakking on cell phones 10 years ago. Eventually people will find something new to complain about.

I've gotten many texts over the years. I don't know what any of them said, I deleted them.
If someone wants to talk to me they can talk to me. If I'm inconvenienced and don't want to answer, they can leave a message. If it's worth it I'll call them back.
Everyone who knows me knows better than to try and text me. Same thing goes with e-mails from someone trying to carry on a conversation. E-mails are for providing information, not for chatting like a bored beotch.

Now get off my lawn!

Texting is great if you want to communicate quickly with someone who monitors their phone closely. Of course, it helps immensely to have a qwerty keyboard like a BB. It is quicker than a call & far more efficient. When I am traveling, I will text my wife that: arrived . . . or . . . at airport . . . or . . . at hotel. I don't want to talk, I just want to relay a quick pertinent message. Texting beats calling or emailing in those circumstances. 5, 10 seconds - done.

It's simply another communication tool that should be used wisely.

It's actually pretty darn fast with "T9 predictive text" It just takes a bit to get used to.

T9 uses a dictionary of common words and the letters of each number to predict what word you're trying to type. For instance, if you want to type the word "road", all you have to do is hit the numbers 7-6-2-3 one time each, and "road" will likely be selected as the word that you wanted to type.

Sometimes when you type a series of numbers, multiple words may match. In that instance, there's usually a key on your keypad that allows you to cycle through the words that match until you hit the one you want. I think I used to have the biggest problems trying to type "in" which could also be "go", "home" which could also be "gone".

Once you get the hang of it, it's easy and fast, and you can type in plain English instead of that crap that the kids use.

I use it with the wife a fair amount. I have a work schedule, but I don't always get out of work on time. Rather than calling, I'll often send a quick note, "on my way home" or "see you in 45 mins" or "stuck at work, will be late" or something like that. Making a call and making her run to get the phone if she's busy or taking the time to dial, wait for the answering machine, and leave a message is much more of a pain in the rear for those sorts of messages than sending a text.

I don't text for everything, but there are times when it's really nice to have the option.
