Plus, can we end the biennial smogging of our old cars?

Not all counties do the smog check after the initial purchase in CA. The eight years I lived there I never paid for a smog check.

MD costs 220 for two years for the 911, no smog checks though, but from what you are all giving me it seems expensive. The Durango is about the same so I don't think there is any discount for older cars. I think that is cheap though, as in Australia my cars cost about 800 each per year to tag.

Whew, crisis averted.
The computer we use for running our scanner does only that. It runs the scanner and it does that just fine. That computer is a Dell 8400 just like the one I am using to type this. It is a 10 year old machine. The battery backup that keeps it happy with electricity started beeping that the battery had to be replaced. OK, shut down the computer, replace the battery and hit the power button and zippo nothing nada silence. Uh oh. ![]() Now I need a nap, that was exhausting! ![]()

The registration part of the bill is cheap, at about $50 each. Now add on compulsory 3rd party insurance and the bill totals about $650 each.
Then each car has private full comprehensive insurance at about $650 each (that bill arrived yesterday). ahh, toys. Who wants 'em? ![]() Morning all, off to the W place again...

Wait, what?
What is compulsory 3rd party insurance? Does every vehicle get some coverage forced by the government even if you have your own insurance? Why do you need two different policies?

By those teeth, it needs a chew toy.
We have had those run in front of us at night out on the road. Funny thing is that they run away like they will outrun a car instead of going back to the ditch. Of course the racoons stand up with their front legs up to make themselves look scary to a vehicle.

yes the department of motor registry demands that you have your third party (public liability) insurance as part of your registration, then you have your third party property and comprehensive vehicle insurance which you can chose to opt out of and pay any damages for others and yourself out of your own pocket, (good luck with that)!

So the public liability insurance is to cover what? We are all supposed to have liability insurance and have to show proof of coverage to get a tag. The cops now have some cars with tag scanners and that is supposed to tell the cop if your tag is current and if your insurance is valid. I have full coverage for my cars and to have my insurance they require uninsured motorist coverage to boot.

public or third party insurance covers any personnel injury of people in your car, or anyone you might injure with your motor vehicle. The meer fact that you have a valid registration/tag shows that you are insured for personal injury for anyone. Is is effectively your Liability insurance.

Back from a couple days skiing. On the way up, stop off in the Alabama Hills (Cali!!!) and found this... Well, the arch is well known. Also better to take the pic during sunrise, but since this was primarily a ski trip, that wasn't in the cards.
![]() ![]() Also took advantage of the dark.... Milky Way, though a dim section of it. ![]()
