Well said Jim. I am in IT and I work in a separate building but when I do go to the other buildings or interact with people from those buildings I do wear a mask. I also avoid the other buildings as much as possible during an outbreak. Unfortunately, accountability is not something viewed as a positive thing here.

David, if I got the flu I would stay home for the residents. I have plenty of PTO and it builds back up pretty quick.

Porsche-poor 12-09-2015 08:00 AM

that would make you a responsible person.

RKDinOKC 12-09-2015 08:02 AM

Company has free flu shots for all employees and members of their families. Don't get a flu shot myself. When I did, sometimes got flu symptoms, sometimes didn't. Mom always got flu shots, not sure why she was as healthy has a horse and never got the flu, or had any reaction to the shot. Other medications it is a different story. If there were side effects listed, she got them.

Interesting that when I was on all the killer antibiotics to kill off that MRSA they specifically said NO flu shot. That ought to tell you something.

GH85Carrera 12-09-2015 08:14 AM

I get a flu shot every year. Vaccinations work. That is why we don't have small pox and polio anymore. I get a slightly warm and red spot at the injection site and no other side effects.

The flu shots are not 100% by anyone's estimation but they are statistically way better than no shot.

Since I have almost no contact with rug rats and little snot bags some people call children I rarely get sick.

flipper35 12-09-2015 08:16 AM

That makes me an atypical hire for here.

We can have an employee break the same proprietary and expensive charger for the med cart computers 4 times in 6 weeks and the DoN does nothing. I was told specifically that nothing will be done if they destroy equipment. They can't be held personally responsible.

I guess I am having a bad day. I see the local credit union needs a network security admin. Be back in a bit.

porsche4life 12-09-2015 11:41 AM

Brent that's pretty common in medical fields... Thuy had to have credentials showing she was up to date on vaccinations including flu every year to be allowed in most of the hospitals she visited as a vendor. Same with her current company and she works in an offsite office building.

Turn it around the other way, if you had a family member in the facility who got the flu and died, and you found out not all the staff had been vaccinated, how pissed would you be?

flipper35 12-09-2015 12:16 PM

The same as if I found someone with the shot spread the flu. Or if the visitors came with the flu. Or i found out masks were not used by staff during the outbreak. Or I could go on because there is no way to know which person the shot works with and which it doesn't. If we had 100% take on the shots and it is 90% (a couple seasons ago it was 30%) effective we still have 50ish potential hosts out there. The take rate for residents is as close to 100% as it gets. So, either the flu shots work and we don't have to take extra precautions (they don't) or they don't work and we should be doing what we can to protect them (we don't).

I completely understand the reasoning behind it, it is just flawed reasoning.

GH85Carrera 12-09-2015 01:16 PM

Brent, all the science says the one can NOT get the flu from the shot or the nose spray. Not that the chance is low, or it is rare, just not gonna happen.

Misconceptions about Seasonal Flu and Flu Vaccines | Seasonal Influenza (Flu) | CDC

I know many people will never believe what the government says but that does not change the facts.

Some years it does a much better job of keeping the flu at bay and some years it does not work very well.

You are a man that nothing will change your mind about it. It is like arguing about the use of seat belts. That science is settled as well and there are many people that refuse to wear seat belts because their mind is made up. To quit your job over a shot is silly in my estimation but it is your job to quit. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

porsche4life 12-09-2015 01:17 PM

It's not flawed Brent. You aren't taking into account that your residents are a high risk group. Even being vaccinated isn't enough for them, making sure the majority of people they come in contact with are vaccinated helps too. Multiple layers of protection. Like I said, just a part of working in healthcare. Same reason they TB test like crazy...

flipper35 12-09-2015 01:45 PM

Glen, what I get is NOT the flu and I have never claimed that it is. It is much worse.

Sid, I am taking into account that they are a very high risk group. The way I found out how badly I react to the flu shot is because when our boy was born, which is also a high risk group, I got the shot 3 years in a row and all three years had the same reaction. My issue is that we do the lip service thing before we do any real work to mitigate the issue. If there is someone in here with the flu, diagnosed by a physician, then they do quarantine that room but if there is flu in the area we do nothing to mitigate the threat of it spreading.

All of us have here had long discussions about it. The latest clarification I got just now is that masks don't have to be worn by staff that have or had the flu because the shot lessons the impact of the strain when it is passed to another. When there is a flu warning for the area the hospitals limit visitors, we don't.

I guess where you are maybe missing my point is where I have the problem is that the shot is treated as a cure all when no other precautions are taken. What I would like to see is the same precautions hospitals in the area take at the same time they take it. Along with that we should close the therapy gym and hydroworks pool to the public at the same time. There is no reason to let the general public use the same equipment the residents use during a flu warning.

Also, I don't have a problem leaving here if this is an issue. I really don't. There are other jobs out here that probably pay a whole lot better than where I am now. I told them if it becomes mandatory for me I would leave and I truly meant it.

Getting late.

Thanks for keeping it civil. Have some guitar lessons and treadmill time coming up.

Ya'll have a good evening.

Porsche-poor 12-09-2015 01:56 PM

so what you are trying to say is something in the shot maybe giving you an allergic reaction that's worse than the flu. Ever tried the nasal version?

We broke a record that was 100 years old. We hit 74 degrees today. It was wonderful weather. Of course I was in a windowless building all day.

Porsche-poor 12-09-2015 02:24 PM

74! Now don't take this the wrong way but I hate you!!!!! LOL

Rick V 12-09-2015 02:26 PM

Evening Y'all,
Never had a flu shot and I have no intentions of changing that. I have had what would be called the flu once in my life so the odds are actually in my favor.
Beth gets one every year and gets sick every year, I never go past a plain old cold.

Rick V 12-09-2015 02:27 PM

Glen is sending that weather this way, Sat is supposed to be 70 and sunny, I foresee a day in the mountains hiking in my very near future.

Porsche-poor 12-09-2015 02:32 PM

That's it I'm making a list and putting you both on it!!!!!

Rick V 12-09-2015 02:34 PM

I am on so many lists whats one more gonna do? :D

Porsche-poor 12-09-2015 02:38 PM
