Never worked as a roofer, but did mow yards during the hot summers when I was younger. Had a 64 Ford van I used as my mobile equipment shed and workshop. It was one of those with the motor under a big hump between the front seats. No factory A/C/ The A/C was a swamp cooler on the roof. Rigged it up so the swamp cooler circulated water from an ice chest I kept cold drinks in using a windshield washer pump. It blew really cold but only moved enough air to keep the van from getting hotter than it was outside. before I added the ice chest feature it just made it humider.

Couldn't handle it today. Too much sitting in a 73° office all day. Matter of fact, trimmed a bunch of tree limbs in the front yard yesterday before it got hot. Was planning to put them out to the curb for big trash day. Went out to get my mail yesterday evening and someone had already moved all the limbs to the curb for me. Now I gotta find em and thank em.

Yea, big trash dad was today. Regular trash tomorrow.

RKDinOKC 06-11-2018 01:30 PM

Great, I put out my regular trash too.

Didn't realize today was big trash dad and cut up about half my trimmings and filled a trash bin with them.
No wonder my neighbor drug what was left to the curb for me.
I claim ignorance due to laziness. Didn't even bother to see when big trash day was.

I bet our roof has had more banging than the Bunny Ranch whore house. Those guys are tough. They got here at 7:00 AM. They took a short break at 10:00 AM or so. They broke for a 15 minute lunch break. Another short break at 2:30 or so. Then a dinner break for 20 minutes at 5:00 PM. They will be up there until sunset.

The guys throw a bundle of shingles on their shoulder, climb up the ladder, walk across the roof and drop the bundle with a thump. Amazing.

GH85Carrera 06-11-2018 06:46 PM

The lazy bums only worked for 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM. It was only triple digit heat. Why back in my day I could have worked on the roof as long as an hour!

We did not have a/c when I was growing up. Dad worked in a machine shop all day and said the guys that had a/c at home were miserable all day. We got a/c at home after they put in swamp coolers in the machine shop.

Remember more than one sleepless night laying in a pool of sweat with a fan blowing on me.
Had a similar experience in college one night, only no fans. It was hot and the eectricity was out all over the small college town.

I did not live in an air conditioned house until I was a Jr. in high school. I never attended an air conditioned school. The house we moved into when I was in 11th grade was a barracks style unit that was more like an apartment. It was a unit that housed 4 families, so there was a family sharing a wall on both ends of our house. The laundry room was at the end of the unit so we had to haul laundry outside for 75 yards.

The AC system had a padlock on it until the base decided it was time to turn it on. We had many HOT springs months.

I vividly remember promising myself that I will someday own a home with central AC and I will control the temp. That took me 10 years to save the money to make the down payment on a house and I woke up in my house on my 28th birthday. It was November, so the AC was not needed, but it was wonderful all summer long. Then I got married 10 years later and lost control of the thermostat set temp. It stays at 78 now.

Good NOT Monday Morning!

Hopefully get to see better late this afternoon! Looking forwared to it (pun intended).

Visited a friend in Austin before he got married. It was very humid, the thermostat was on 80°, and the hot water tank was turned off. AFTER he got married and she took over the house it went to a cool 73* with a set back to 70° at night. And the hot water heater heater works.

Didn't understand the water heater thing. He would go to a local gym to take warm showers. He did not work out. The gym membership cost more than keeping the water tank hot.

He still has never mowed his back yard. He started to just after getting married, then found some poison ivy in the back yard and stopped before actually getting it mowed. Didn't mention to his wife that I found poison ivy in my back yard right after I moved in and killed it with some spray stuff. Nobody even got a rash or nuthin.

They need to be living in a neighborhood like my brother behind me. The neighborhood association takes care of everything outside and they have maids for everything inside. My brother and his wife even have a cook.

When I lived in El Centro you could not take a cold shower in the summer time.

At our current house the geothermal heats the water to 131* and it is stored in our huge 119 gal. tank. The people that had the house before us had put in a Kohler Water Haven shower and that required the big water heater.

It also costs more to run the attic fan than the geothermal in the summertime so it stays cool in the house.

Oh, happy Tuesday!

Porsche-poor 06-12-2018 06:16 AM

Morning all. Yep its Tuesday time to look like I care for a few hours.

RKDinOKC 06-12-2018 06:37 AM

I have my water heater set on vacation mode. It keeps it at only 60°. Found that using any water causes the burners to turn on and it is designed so the water leaving the tank is the first to get heated. It takes the same time for hot water to get to my shower as it does with the tank set hotter. I don't use enough water for it to start getting cooler. Only take body temp showers anyway.

Discovered it when doing some research on putting a clock controller on the heater. Wanted to find out how long I would have to pre-heat before getting hot water when I wanted to use it. Discovered the hot water coming just as quickly when in Vacation mode and tossed the idea of putting a $17 controller on the tank. Don't really care about hot water anywhere else, my dishwasher does it's own water heating. Found my clothes washer does just as good on cottons on warm with the vacation mode as it did hot.

Yep, my AC is the most expensive thing I got energy wise. 20 to 25 kWh a day difference from winter and these 90° summer days. With this SmartHours pricing even though it's more electricity it my electric bills are about the same.

Porsche-poor 06-12-2018 06:40 AM

I think the kids computers burn more juice than anything else in the house. The A/C has come on a few times but not a lot.

RKDinOKC 06-12-2018 07:03 AM

In the winter my usage is 15 to 18 kWh and that includes network/wifi/4 servers, 8 hrs on my laptop with external monitor, TV, Fridge, lights, etc. Don't cook much but when I do I use the smaller 1000w burner instead of 1500w and my 1500w toaster oven instead of the 3500w oven. Oh yeah, and keep everything off unless using, lights, printers etc, and things with transformers on powerstrips and turned off unless using.

Found my iPhone 7 actually charges faster plugged into my laptop instead of an outlet as well. Guess the USB port has more watts than the USB plug.

Welp, it's after 10am, can't eat or drink until after the surgury at 4:15pm

Porsche-poor 06-12-2018 07:18 AM

so posting pictures of food at this point would be bad form?

Ours too. Plus the one connected to the TV with the library of videos we own, but that one is a low TDP processor and graphics.

I have been hungry today for some reason. Must be Richards mention of not eating. New employee orientation is today and I already gave my talk. They had donut holes and they were pretty good for a change. I should have had more than one.

Porsche-poor 06-12-2018 08:00 AM

Go back for seconds!!!!

RKDinOKC 06-12-2018 08:10 AM

I don't mind food pictures. Had some really good ham and mushroom sliders yesterday. Gonna have to get me a meat grinder. Will work much better than a food processor for making ground ham for burgers.

Donut holes are empty calories!

My wife, er the mean boss's wife is a major user of electricity. Her dad was an employee of the power company and they had an all electric house and did not turn off room lights when they left a room. Her dad had the only outdoor electric BBQ grill I have ever seen.

She has a freshwater aquarium with pumps running 24-7 and the light that runs 16 hours a day. The koi pond has a big pump that runs 24-7 and a UV light that is always on to kill the algae that make the water cloudy. That way we have a clear pond and we can see the fish and the bottom of the pond.

Of course we have a DVR for TV that always runs, and I have a second DVR for the security system cameras. The computer I am typing this on is a big power user.

I just average my electric bill each month. They look at the total for the year and divide by 12. It is not bad at all.

Porsche-poor 06-12-2018 08:48 AM

at least she didn't want an electric car that you needed to charge all the time.

Jim Richards 06-12-2018 08:49 AM

I just saw this today. Wow.
