Have Royal Purple in the Cobra. I think I am going to drop a baffled oil pan in so it doesn't slosh to the back of the center sump under hard acceleration and drop oil pressure with lesser oils. I need to baffle the fuel tank as well. I have run the floats dry before the top of third when the fuel level is low and if I build the block I have in the garage it will only get worse with 25% more power.

We have fiber at work and a bonded T1 as backup. You can tell when the firewall switches to the backup as everything seems to be running through syrup.

Do any of all y'all in OK know if there is a historical site or memorial there for Ernest Evans of the USS Johnston? One of Jacobs heros.

Off to a wake. Guy not much older than me passed on Sunday.

Big thunderstorms right now. Talk to you tomorrow.

GH85Carrera 09-25-2018 04:38 PM

Whew, we got to fly in mostly clear skies today. It was great.

I use Kendall oil in both the El Camino and the 911. It was called Brad Benn for years. The name changed but it is still green. Both vehicles have solid lifters. The higher ZDPP or molybdenum and stuff is in there to help with old solid lifter engines.

20-50 for the 911 and 10-30 for the Elky.

I have never heard of a memorial for Ernest Evans, but if Google works, I can find it.

It is weird to have a friend of ones own age or ever much younger die. One of my friends died of kidney cancer at age 30 long ago. I still think of him when I see his daughter and her kids.

RKDinOKC 09-25-2018 06:18 PM

Use Royal Purple 20-50 in the 928 because the bottles match the color of the car and I had to carry bottles of it when it was using oil. Don't know what they put in after the rebuild. With 1K on the clock figure it's time to change out that "break-in" oil.

Recently had to fluids refreshed on the Turbo. Have no idea what brand or even viscosity they used.

Was told, before the ZDDP EPA stupidity, that oils were close enough you could change brands with every oil change with no ill effects. The important thing being to change at the proper interval and change the filter. That the filter mainly removed water from the oil and water was the thing that was causing problems. That is also why short drives are not recommended as they do not give the oil the chance to run hot enough for long enough to help remove the water.

It's kinda like the R2 vs R134 thing. After the EPA outlaws R2 and gets everything switched to R134, they find 134 is worse for the environment than R2.
Or just manufacturing batteries for electrics/hybrids causes more harm to the environment than driving a huge SUV with poor gas mileage.

And, talking about solid lifters. Hope you never have to replace them. The EPA has outlawed some of the chemicals used when manufacturing those solid lifters that keeps them from being able to be manufactured as hard as they once were. So, besides removing the ZDDP, they also made it so new lifters could not be manufactured to the same specs.

Just remember, ALL petroleum products are bad, and anything that uses petroleum is bad. EVERYTHING needs to be made from renewable resources like wood/plants, and powered by solar energy.

Woke up kinda early this morning.

Good Morning anyway.

Jim Richards 09-26-2018 03:31 AM

Buongiorno, y’all. Royal Purple was all I put into the 964 garage queen. I haven’t decided what oil to use in the 280Z. Heck, I’ve only driven it 2 miles since purchasing it.

RKDinOKC 09-26-2018 05:04 AM

A lot of the 928 crowd use Mobil 1 like the car was borned with. Royal Purple was popular for a long time, now everyone that is not using Mobil 1 seems to be switching to Brad Penn, or whatever the green stuff is being called today.

It used to be so nice to be able to tell what was leaking, purple oil. blue or gold brakes, red transmission, green radiator.

flipper35 09-26-2018 05:38 AM

All we can get around here is amber brake fluid.

Jacob and I are building a model of the DD557 Johnston. He has done a fair amount of the airbrushing. Since CDR Evans was originally from Oklahoma we thought there might be something there for Jacob. We will be coming through around Oct 11 or 12 on the way back from Austin Spiceworld conference again. We are stopping at the bombing memorial this year as we have a bit more time.

GH85Carrera 09-26-2018 05:51 AM

Brad Penn (the green oil) is now called Kendall. Named after the refinery where it is made. It has the right amount of ZDPP and my solid lifters like it. Read through that monster oil thread on the 911 tech site. You will see some real camshaft damage from new oils with no ZDPP. The EPA does not like the stuff because it can poison a catalytic converter if you are burning oil. Cats are expensive but nothing even close to new cams. And they are lots easier to change.

On the 911, I change oil once per year, usually right before a road trip to Parade. On the Elky, every 3,000 miles. Likely that is overkill, but it sure keeps the insides of the engine clean. If you find my thread on Pelican about my engine swap I have photos of the old 305 with 300K miles. The insides were cleaner than many engines with low miles. Virtually no sludge or gunk at all after 300,0000 miles is pretty good. Yea, that engine went to the scrap steel place. But it went 300,000 miles and never missed a beat, except the rings and valve seals were worn out. A full head rebuild was more expensive than just swapping in a brand new 350. That math was pretty easy to do. And I would have had a rebuilt 305 instead of a 350.

Porsche-poor 09-26-2018 06:02 AM

morning all. I'm hoping the RDX can go a lot more miles. With one kid in college and one starting next year I don't need a car payment.

Jim Richards 09-26-2018 06:08 AM

Glen, I have a cat on my 280Z, and so far it doesn’t seem to burn oil. I’m not sure whether to try using Brad Penn/Kendall or not. Since my car will be garage art for another couple of months, I have time to think about this.

Brent, you and Jacob have a nice project to work on. I served on DD-762 for a while. WWII-era tin cans are a wild ride in rough seas. :D

GH85Carrera 09-26-2018 06:58 AM

Fall has arrived. It is 58 degrees and drizzly outside. The high today is supposed to be in the mid 60s.

Jim, I can't really imagine those WW2 era ships and the lack of GPS navigation or modern radios, traversing the seas in stormy weather. Thanks for your service.

The pilot I hire to fly me around when my partner is busy or out of town has been very cautious at first with his turns to keep me from getting air sick. I keep telling him to not worry about it, I have never been motion sick. My partner for sure cranks the airplane into turn to make the 180 turn at the end of a flightline and get onto the next flight line. The contractor pilot makes big gentle "lollypop" turns. That takes longer, and means more fuel burn. He is getting faster at it as he sees I have not been getting airsick at all.

Yesterday we had a decent crosswind takeoff. We popped off the ground, and I was looking down the runway out the side window. We had a pretty good crab angle to stay over the runway. The wind had died down when we landed so that was easy.

He is an pilot instructor. He was hired by some parents to take their 12 year old boy on a flight just for fun. He said it was pretty windy and it was a direct 90 degrees from the runway. He asked if the kid was sure he wanted to go that day. Of course he did. So as the took off he said they were sideways to the runway and the kid was jut giggling like the happiest kid ever. He loved every minute of the flight. He said he was planning on becoming a pilot.

I did all the artwork for the first 4 years of the Memorial Marathon. Proposed an ad campaign the background photo had runners running in front the Memorial. It started with only a couple then the ads added runners the closer it got to the Marathon. The ads were killed because they thought it was bad taste even though a lot of pictures of the marathon showed runners running in front of the marathon?

I noticed that the USS Johnston bombarded Eniwetok in 1944. Three decades and change later, I spent a few days on another ship bringing supplies to Eniwetok so they could eventually try to reclaim the atoll after the US used it for cold-war nuclear target practice.

GH85Carrera 09-26-2018 08:49 AM

One of my friends that I got to know in Hawaii was in the Navy on a nuclear sub. He was a black man with VERY dark skin. He was single and had no bills except buying his toys. He would deploy for 6 months at a time and they would stay under for months at a time. He never had the slightest clue as to what part of the ocean they were in. They would sometimes come into port and he did not know until they opened the hatch if it was going to be bone chilling cold or tropical hot.

He was into photography and I met him at the base photography hobby shop. He had the first Hasselblad I ever saw in person. We would go out around the island and shoot photos, mostly of girls in bikinis but some landscapes and lots of sunsets. That is what hoked me on photography.

The funniest part to me was I was out and about all the time and totally tanned. He would come out of a sub for 6 months and this very dark black man got sunburned. He for sure did not get pink or blistered, but he said it was a little painful. A white man that was without a tan or sunscreen likely would have been severely sunburned. Since I spent most of the day outside I was sunburn proof. Now I go see the dermatologist every 6 months and get spots burned off.

RKDinOKC 09-26-2018 09:13 AM

I was about 4. An uncle came to visit that summer. They were all at the kitchen table and I came thru. He stopped me and commented that I was getting so dark I was turning into an n word. I said I was not, see...and showed everyone my white palms. They all cracked up. Hey, I was only 4 and I did have a very dark tan.

That same summer a neighbor girl and I found a can with some white house paint in the vacant lots we played in behind my house. We ended up getting necked and painting each other white. Mom was mad but got even more upset when she found we were painted under our clothes. She scrubbed hard enough it really hurt taking the paint off with turpentine.

Guess I can't run for office now because of those racist events in my past.

RKDinOKC 09-27-2018 04:01 AM

Mertnin...

It's 7am and barely any natural lighting outside. I declare Summer as officially over.

GH85Carrera 09-27-2018 05:11 AM

Yea, it is currently 49 degrees and the high is forecast to be 72. I like it. No doubt we will have a ice storm in a few days and winter will be here.

First, I second that thank you for your service (and everyone else here for that matter).

I imagine some of those seas you feel like a cork in a spa. We are almost done with the Johnston. There are a couple things like the color of the walkways on the deck we messed up on but most people wouldn't know and it is the older bridge style but we couldn't find the correct one.

My wife's youngest brother was a machinist mate on a boomer.

Finally at the end of our migration. I have to take the servers down to move them from the old cluster to the new (license restriction, no technical reason) so I have our Exchange and the big file server to go and we are done!

Even with the hassle of moving servers I am NOT moving to 365.

Porsche-poor 09-27-2018 06:00 AM

morning all. The wife's office is moving to 365 and boy is she not happy. Lots of crap she already read and deleted came back, appointments missing on the calendar. Makes for a ruff day when you think you have no meetings and they start showing up.

GH85Carrera 09-27-2018 06:18 AM

I certainly understand why Microsoft is pushing everyone to update. Billions in income for Microsoft.

It just sucks when your entire calendar and contacts are "on-line" and suddenly you are off line and can't get to them. My iPhone had a weird glitch when I flew to DC recently. I got off the airplane and turned off airplane mode, and and all my email and contacts and calendar were gone. I had crappy cell connection. I had to wait until I got to an area with good cell signal for them to all return and it took a while to repopulate. My cell phone is my brain's backup and lots is in the phone that I would lost without. I back it up regularly.

I survived for most of my life without it, so I know it is possible. I don't want to go back.
