Get off my lawn!
|
OK, that was too easy.
Sunday evening I noticed the toilet in the guest bathroom was filling just super slow, like over an hour to be ready to flush. So Monday at 10am or so I made a quick trip to the local Lowe's and got a new fill valve. Cheap and easy. I knew I had to go pick up the prints and deliver them, and I did not want to face the toilet valve replacement and get my Polo shirt with the company logo on it sweaty, so I procrastinated. Today I had the delivery to get done, and some bookkeeping to do, so I waited until this afternoon. I went to the garage just once, and got my hand pump to drain the water from the tank, and one pair of channel lock pliers, and a old towel to sop up the drips. The valve was out and the new one in within 5 minutes. It was like a TV edited TV show and everything went as designed. I am stunned. Normally when I do plumbing jobs it usually involves 5 or more trips to the store, half of my tool box, and a weekend to replace the toilet handle. I will keep a close eye on it but I think it is fixed. Amazing.

the easy toilet valve is offset by the hidden mystery oil leak.

Preliminary inspection it looks like it may be the transmission leaking. I will get it in the air and see for sure. That will be an expensive one, as I don't do automatic transmissions. I "have a guy" that built and installed the transmission.

Crap, it is the transmission. It is a total mess under the car in that area.
I called the shop, and they are booked up until next week, so the 911 is going into service as a daily driver. It is nice to have a second car. I will have to have it towed over to the shop, and that will be 50 to 75 bucks alone. The transmission is working fine, just massive leaks. So next week, it goes to the doctor.

I have been waiting on a replacement cooling fan for the Cobra. The last few days have reminded me of El Centro in temps so did not mind it not arriving this week.
Parts came to attach kayaks to the motorcycle trailer though.

I remember on my trip out of San Diego I had the great fun of driving through real garden spots like El Centro, and other less desirable parts of California along I-8.
I remember stopping for breakfast and getting in my 911 with a full tummy, and thinking enjoy the nice weather for a few more minutes, it is gonna suck for many hours. I had to keep turning up the AC speed and the temperature down. Still in my book the worst place in California is Boron. It makes Bakersfield look really nice and upscale, and that is no exaggeration. I made a pee stop in Boron, and there was NOTHING but brown dirt and dust in the wind, and every semi in California much go through there. I have never seen so many 18 wheelers, and miles and miles of nothing to see.

I have just vague memories of Death Valley days on TV. Yea, the Borax mines are the only reason that place exists.
We drove through some of the deserts of Utah, and there are long stretches of road where there is nothing growing, or ever grew. It looks like the lunar photos. It was kinda pretty as long as we were in a comfortable air conditioned car and had our ice chest of water bottles in the car. I asked a state trooper why in the world they had fences along the highway as there was nothing living for hundreds of miles. He said it was to tell if someone drove off the road and went through they would know where to look for the bodies.

We started the day with some real fun, a trip to Sam's for a fruit run. OK, I did buy a huge can of coffee, typical oversize stuff made for the warehouse stores. Wait, coffee is actually a fruit!.
So it was an all fruit buy. They open at 8:00 and we arrived at 8:03 and people were pushing huge carts of stuff to the cars already.

We have the Plus membership that lets us in at the earliest moment. I thing the folks leaving were all web orders, all large carts, with a ton of stuff for a business. No family needs a case of coffee, hot chocolate mix, and 10 cases of various drinks like gatoraide and 10 cases of bottled water.
We like to go pick out the fruit, and be sure to get one with no obvious bad spots.

I got a text this morning from USAA about credit card fraud and to call them. So I went to the USAA app on my phone and looked up the number and called that number. Sure enough, some scammer was trying to do a $5 charge 8 different times for some on-line game. That one account has my card, and one my business partner carries. It was his card that was trying to be used. So he gets a new card in the mail soon, and the old card is dead. He has a few automatic payments setup on that card. My business partner's theory is if a company wants money from him, they all know how to contact him. And he is right, they all do know how to contact the client.

When I was under the El Camino looking at the leaky transmission I noticed the dust and debris cover for the flex plate and torque converter had two broken bolt holes, and needs to be replaced. POS piece of plastic only has 370,000 miles of sitting around hot engine and transmission components, and and exhaust pipe a few inches away on both sides. The replacement part was $39 bucks and it is stamped steel, so it should last at least 400,000 miles or more.
It is nice to have a small block engine, and transmission used in many millions of cars. Parts are cheap. I know a small piece of engine sheet metal for my 911 is a bit higher price. ![]() Wow, was I right. I looked it up https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/93010608520OEM.htm?pn=930-106-085-20-OEM&bt=Y&fs=0&SVSVSI=807 $605 for this. About the same amount of steel stamped out from steel sheets.
