I've got AWD - but only to "haul" myself to the office through SoCal traffic.

Banned but not out, yet..

And we now interrupt the "off road capable" commercial with a little bit of "on road" humility. On our third Legacy/Outback as well as having two AWD Audis. Fantastic on ski trips and up hills while everyone else is parked in the snow. We now return you to the testosterone filled holier than tho "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" PSA already in progress.

Yes. 2012 Outback 3.6R Limited. At least it's a flat-6 too!
We call it the "Japanese Audi"

2006 4runner and 2001 Integra Type R. Not really a Subi guy. I'd probably throw too much money at it...

Subaru does indeed use many AWD systems but all of them have some sort of active center differential. The one in my 2005 Legacy GT is a viscous and the rear diff is viscous also. The STI has a center diff that lets the driver dial in the torque split. Further, Subaru has used Torsens in the rear of a number of models. My Subaru doesn't even have electronic traction control of any form By contrast, the '98 Audi A4 I owned used EDL (electronic differential lock) for transferring torque side to side. It grabbed the brake on the wheel that was spinning. This couldn't be shut off by the driver. Torque split front to back was by means of a center Torsen. The system you described is what Mercedes uses. All three diffs are open and torque is directed away from the spinning wheel(s) by applying the brake.

Surprised to find I have not replied to this thread! On my fourth Subaru wagon as daily driver: wouldn't be without one now. Got a few other cars, but the Sube is great to run.
This is an '02 Outback 2.5 with manual trans, runs on propane gas. Tank is in the wheel well in the trunk. Still has the main petrol tank underneath and you do use a little for starting etc. And for touring in countries where they don't sell propane gas for fuel (Ireland). Economy is the same as gasoline but, here in the tax-mad UK, propane gas is less than half the price. I take this everywhere. Back at home in Ireland for a wedding: ![]() At the Pistenklause for dinner and the Nürburgring 24-hour: ![]() Having its annual wash (normally 'cleaned' by flowing rivers!):
