To quote the man that started my company "I took early retirement at age 91." He is 93 now and still misses coming to work everyday. The retirement program at my company sucks, but why retire when you look foreword to going to the office? I hope I can make it to age 91 before I retire.

The way it's looking, we'll ALL be working until 91 before we can retire...

I'm hating my job now too, if it's any consolation. The government customer doesn't trust us scheming contractors to build good product, despite the fact that we've demonstrated time and time again that we can deliver ahead of schedule, under budget, and with more functionality than required. We're sneaking around behind the project lead's back to improve the product without him finding out until it's too late. It's like some bizarre episode from Hitchcock.
So I'm starting a business. I want to build products that people love, not products that people tolerate because we're the lowest bidder and the end-user didn't have any say in the decision anyway. Good luck to you. Dan

Hang in there until you find something better. In the meantime, smile at people, find reasons to laugh, and send out resumes.

Which would you guys rather have more success with, your significant relationship (marriage) or career?
It seems for me that a successful relationship is measured on a weekly basis, we can both be difficult. I know from experience that changing spouses just changes the nature of the problems. I'm now certain that there's no perfect relationship for me, it's a matter of difficulty & what we can tolerate. Some weeks are bliss, some weeks are hell, it's cyclical. I've had a career I hated, I spent eight years in underground construction. I hated going to work & wallowing in the mud when it would pour rain all day & was near freezing. I despised nearly all my coworkers & we were all openly hostile toward each other. Even on the best days, it was back breaking work. I now have what I consider the perfect job for the last eight years. I love to come to work 90% of the time. I find that even the difficult days are just a passing challenge to gain more experience. I like 80% of my coworkers & can pretty much ignore the rest. I guess in my jaded view, relationships & careers have a lot of parallels. Both can be difficult to achieve success in or walk away from. A lot of people use them to measure the success/failure of life. People can be devastated by the loss of either or launched into success by entering their ideal situation. To answer my own question, I'd have to side on relationship because it's harder for me to achieve.

I'm lucky I have a good relationship with a wonderful woman and two boys who are fantastic.
Unfortunately the damage this job does to me impacts the way I interact with them at times. Short version, this job can make me a bad dad and husband. It doesn't happen often overall but recently it has been happening more. It isn't the work that gets me, I truly love what I do and work actively to be the best at my job. I want to be that go to guy, in IT being the guy with the solutions (rather than the 'NO!' guy) is where the bread and butter are at. That's the main reason I feel that I have never had problems finding work. Even in this company I have opportunities outside of my current position. My plans are most likely that I will move to another position working for a much better manager; unfortunately the middle manager for that position hasn't been hired yet so there is some unknown there. The Director however has already told me I've got the job - I may have to push him to move me sooner than later but I don't want to expose the underlying problems I'm having with my 'Sr' manager. I love the work, I used to have great regard for the organization but with recent shifts it has become one of the worst jobs I have ever had.

Well Mikester at least it sounds like you have a plan, just make sure to talk to your wife & family to let them know what is going on in your head so you don't have any miscommunication at home.. Still, concider your self lucky, I talked to a buddy today, like you, very good in his field, but his job is going away in Jan..

Aint it grand? "Just be glad you have a job" only goes so far, it's not an open-ended excuse to blatantly take advantage of people.

Right freakin' on. Half the shop was laid off so when we get busy, (which we do, to the same degree before the "S" hit the "F"), we get stretched thin, and it becomes hard not to complain.

At least I have a 40 minute drive to work, on nice winding country roads, that is 1 hour, 20 minutes a day of peace.
