If it was fun, you'd have to pay to do it...

The way things have been going, you must be a little surprised to still have a job? Some tough stories you've posted lately.

I'm mildly surprised.

Today was about 6 hours of troubleshooting and then a revelation that we hadn't even though of and then it was fixed.

A previous employee did something, didn't document it and then it hid from us until today where it came up and bit me straight in my half day friday. Frustrating manager who is my manager's manager but doesn't have much respect for any chain of command, etc, etc.

I can't wait until Monday.

I am happy to be employed and I try not to take it for granted but they are running me ragged.

Now is not a good time to be unemployed.

I agree with the above. Right now, just thank your lucky stars you actually have a job and suck up any inconvenience/irritation. I guarantee EVERY employer/boss out there either has or is putting a list together in their head of "who gets the axe" even if they haven't laid off or cut staff yet. Don't give yourself a reason to be on it by being a constant complainer.

From first-hand experience I can say that if you ever were to get let go, it would take a mighty long time to find something else, and it would involve an astonishing degree of effort, agony and difficulty.

Best to you. Sorry to hear things are tough to deal with right now.

Ya know the saying, "Find something you love to do, make it your career and you will never work a day in your life" that is total BS.
It should go as follows, "Find something you love to do, make it your career and you will detest what you once loved"
I always hate my job, not just today, but every day. But like others have said, at least I have a job. I still try and do the best I can.

You can count me as fortunate. I don't hate my job but for the first 18 years I did. Despised it. Automotive at the OEM level is not for the faint of heart. I look back and wonder how I did it. Getting in my car after work and literally holding onto the steering wheel screaming bloody murder. Then other times the complete opposite, getting home sitting in my chair trying not to weep. I'm in what's called general industrial now, it feels like semi-retirement, (and they gave me a 10% increase to take the job . I do count my blessings to not only have a job but a good, well paying job. For not choosing my profession it's OK.

Recently read an article about 54 percent of job holders would consider employment with a new company for equal or better opportunity. The highest recorded (normal is ~30%) there is alot of unhappy folks out there

I must be the exception to the rule. I love my job. I love the place I work. They pay me plenty of money for what I do and I look forward to going to work every day.

Totally serious.

5 years ago I was growing to detest my job. Even thought I owned the place I hated it. There were days when I did not even want to go in and days when I walked out and went and hung out / vented on my mechanic friend.

Then the economy tanked, and I had to lay 15 people off over a 2 year period. Now its down to me and another guy, the best guy in the place.

I love my job again, no drama, no "who is mad at who", no who did not show up and we have to shuffle everyone around.

I think the best part is, I got up from behind a desk and went back out in the field, being a land surveyor in Florida, its not a piece of cake. 105 degree heat index all week last week. No problem. Hacking with a machete through the woods, no problem. Bug bites and rashes from underbrush, no problem.

Now that I am back outside (and inside too) I love it again. I already decided if it ever gets busy again, I am staying outside. I forgot how much fun it is.

Here's where the rub comes in. When core, critical employees/leaders are exploited during times when job choices are lean, those same employers will find themselves dealing with critical vacancies when things improve. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Loyalty is a two way street, and that street will change directions eventually.

Mikester,
I've been feeling that too for some time. Started being really negative, angry, difficult. About a month ago, one of my mentors who noticed my downward spiral over the last 6 or so months gave me the book, "The Energy Bus"
The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy | by Jon Gordon
It's an easy read and entertaining, and I was able to relate to the story very easily. It really made me think about what was going on and how to improve my situation.
I still generally dislike my job, but I've applied several of the principles from the book, set some new goals, and I'm smiling and finding things to enjoy at work now.
Your results may vary, but I'm incredibly thankful that my mentor gave me this book and I found the book to be very helpful in helping me find a way to enjoy things more.

I'll take a look at it man.

To be honest, my 'manager's manager' the one I mentioned earlier had made like he was pulling me aside 'as a friend' or mentor or something that he had heard some negative feedback regarding the way I was interacting with the people I work with.

Now; We had been given specific instructions on what we were supposed to be working on and what we weren't. Basically we were told to ask, is there a ticket or is a project? So, I've been doing that - now I get people complaining that I'm unapproachable and won't work on anything unless there is a ticket or its a project.

So I ask him if she can tell me where she heard that from or anything about the context. She won't tell me anything; so I tell her fine but it is difficult for me to adjust things if I don't know the context. Generally speaking I try to treat people I work with with respect and cooperation. There are a few however who have really either abused me or are so difficult that I cannot go the extra mile for them.

I asked my boss about it and he said that, yes he knew and that his manager (who i have been talking about) wanted him to put it in my review. This is the first time anyone that I am aware of has ever said anything even remotely negative about me. I felt betrayed, this person made like they were doing me a favor and really they were trying to torpedo me (in my eyes). We haven't had raises in over a year and this sort of thing could really torpedo that and any possibility of me getting the promotion my boss thinks I should get. I suppose if his manager wants to torpedo that - well, there isn't much stopping him. I didn't trust him before and I don't know at all.

Still, I was glad to get the feedback - I'll be more careful in my interactions.

Your impact on the people around you is more than you think.

In the few years I've been here the middle managers have moved around a bit so I hope I can wait this irritation out. This management structure is a little heavy on the managers - we could do with one less. I just hope it ends up being the right one...
