work force reduced.. but found a better paying job!
laid off.. but found a better paying job!
Funny how things turn out sometimes.... Wonder how my career outlook(and portfolio) would compare 5 years from now if I stayed vs ending up here? I hope better.. but the choice was made for me! Anyone ever thankful for being fired?

I was laid off in February from my 18+ year job. I went to work for the company that our owners sold to and hated it. Promises to move me into management quickly went away after a major deal fell through.
I was extremely pleased that they laid me off in May. While I miss the salary and perks that came with being in management, I do not miss the stress or the crap that came with it. My job now is low stress and very little effort is needed to do it. I do my job and then go home. It's not what I plan to be doing in 5-10 years but it is allowing me to spend more time home during the week.

A study I read about recently determined people who move from job-to-job end up making more in the long run vs. those who stay put for the long term.

Ahhh, the magic way to build time, aka Cargo!
Good luck and have fun with it. I did it early on in my career and its a good time builder and way to learn.

Congrats! I'm not doing what I thought I'd be doing or working where I thought I'd be working 5 years ago. Funny how things turn out...

Congrats! In some ways I wish my company would lay me off. A former boss would hire me for his company, but currently can't for risk of making my current employer angry. He operates an engineering services company that does business with my current employer. Just my good luck.....

Who are you flying with? Whats the name??? What kind of bird?
They will put you through a long range and RVSM course, have to by law. You will learn to love/hate a plotting chart and master document. In the end Atlantic/Pacific crossings are hours and HOURS of boredom, with position reports on HF and finally you get to land and hopefully crash in the hotel for a couple of days. Will look good in the logbook but you get tired of it pretty soon.

ATI is based in Miami and has been doing some hiring. If that's your gig it sounds like an adventure! Not a bad deal that you'll be making more than a 9 year Captain at your old job by the time you hit year three. The experience will be pretty awesome as well.

A DC-8 would be neat. Hell anything would beat another MGM overnight...
![]() But actually If every thing goes well I will be on the Mega mad-dog. ![]() It should be quite the adventure... Just have to keep my nose clean and learn all I can.

Gon fix it with me hammer

in retrospect, yes, very much so. Was in Holland for 6 years, great co-workers, but the company itself was turning sour more and more each year... new manager who did everything to demotivate me... But i stayed because i had great coworkers and friends, and leaving a decent paycheck, to move back to Belgium and then find a job just never felt comfortable... But ultimately i got close to a complete burn out, manager kept pushin my buttons, couple of blow ups and got fired with a decent package, which payed for my repatriation(and cleared much of my debt), got a good job pays better + company car, bought my house, with double garage, all that's missing now is a Porsche in it. But i'm working on that, it's on the top of my list ![]()

Air-cooled,
The MD-10/11 is a good bird but one thing. Its very difficult on final approach in one aspect. If your rate of descent starts to get high it can be difficult to arrest things and save the approach. Pilots are now taught not to try to save it and to go around. Same if the bird bounces more than just "a bit." They will teach you this but just keep this in mind. What happens when its not done right: ![]() And ![]() When its done right: ![]() ![]() Joe A (taking my "former McDonnell Douglas factory pilot" hat off now)
