would you take a chicken to the vet?

we have one bird that is losing her feathers. we call her #2 because that is where she is in the pecking order. she may have slid a few slots, because we saw #3 chasing her. we dont know if #3 is pulling her feathers or not. i pounced on each bird one by one, and looked for mites. i dusted them liberally with that diama..(something) earth just in case. i went nuts and left them looking like talcum puff balls. i expanded their nesting area, and made a new chicken condo/nesting/roost boxes.

what can a vet bill for a chicken end up being? feels kinda strange taking a chicken to the vet...

should i just make soup?

the birds are well fed. we give them a good mix, and fresh veggies...i dont think it is a nutritional problem.

Are these children's pets? If so, what lesson do you want to teach out of this? How to care for a pet? Where your food comes from?

If not, fire up the grill.

Me? I'd make a fricassee. It's a dish designed for a lean, old chicken.

Friends had a pet rat, develop a tumor. Insert your own punch line here.

They were in the middle of a "career" transistion, (Lab Manager to Doctor) and couldn't afford surgery. The children were devistated. And appearently, this was the time when PETA was pushing kids to get "pet rats".

My sister's kids went through the "pet rat" phase. I asked her how many she had. Then I went on and sked her what more than 2 rats were called. An Infestation.

Are these pet chickens, or planned for food?

Is she molting?

And no, I would not take a chicken to the vet. Heck, if I won't take my kids to a doctor, I sure ain't gonna take a chicken to the vet.

I don't know what a replacement chicken would cost, but I suspect it is less than a visit to a vet. Just name the new chicken RC for Replacement Chicken.

these are not really pets. just egg factories at this point. not helping her case now that egg production has virtually ceased due to the winter season.

A chicken walks into a bar.

The bartender says "We don't serve poultry!"

The chicken says "That's OK I just want a drink."

Your very own Pelican-esque chicken forum:

My brother is a vet. His personal assessment of the practice seems to be: 85% of animals will be OK whether they come to him or not. 10% he can help. 5% are gonna die. Veterinary medicine is largely about treating the owner.

Yup - she is just molting. They do look terrible while this is going on. Just keep the coop clean and keep the drafts down. She will be OK.

You can take it to a vet... But after dating the daughter of a vet and getting to know him really well he will tell you that you don't want to pay that much for a damned chicken... And yes he would have eaten it...
