Moron on I-55

I was driving home from Chicago today. We left at 10:30 this morning but made slow progress as we hit a snowstorm and traffic slowed to 50-60 mph. I knew we would be driving through this storm, so I didn't get frustrated. I just moved with traffic and didn't try to make any sudden moves at the wheel and watched the road for other drivers. We saw at least two dozen cars in the ditch, so that told me that conditions were not to be messed with.

We got about 10 miles outside of Bloomington and it was snowing, but not bad. The interstate wasn't plowed, but steady traffic had kept two ruts cleared in each lane.

I notice a Jeep charging up on me. I'm doing 55 mph--the pace of traffic and what I felt was a safe speed. This guy is doing 80-90 mph. Clearly he thinks that 4WD makes him invincible.

Anyway, he is in the left lane and I'm in the left lane, but the built-up snow between lanes is high enough that I don't attempt to move over--I don't think it's safe to try. I was right. He starts to move into the right lane to pass me. As soon as all four wheels are off of the ruts and into the built-up snow, he starts to fishtail. Through my rear-view mirror, I see him go sideways, pointed towards the outside ditch. As soon one of his wheels hits dry pavement, he shoots off the interstate and into the ditch with a glorious white rooster tail. There is a good 50 feet of runoff before there are some woods. He crosses it in seconds crashes through a fence and into a tree.

I kept going. Really, I think the moron got what he deserved. But stopping was impractical. Besides, I'm not sure if I could have avoided punching him for his idiocy.

Thank God he didn't take any one else with him. (I hope). That must have been a he** of a show in your review mirror. And more than a little scary considering the conditions. I wouldn't have stopped either, just called the Highway Patrol.
Glad your OK

At least the dumbass did not take any other cars with him.

Years ago I saw a lady in a new Cadillac pass me in heavy rain. I was driving 50 MPH to avoid hydro-planning. She had to be going 80. All of a sudden she did several 360s and slid off into the ditch. There were no cell phones in those days. I stopped at the next exit and reported the crash. I still don't care if she was OK. She was 100% dumbass. Darwin at work.

The same thing happened to me few years ago on my X-Terra, except I was the moron, was doing only 50 mph and only hit the guard rail at very reduced speed. Since then, I have learned to shift lanes very slowly when there is snow inbetween. It gives a good adrenaline rush to try to control a sideway slide at 40 mph on the Parkway . Cost me only $35 to replace the rear corner bumper plastic piece. I was very lucky.

Far as I'm concerned, anybody driving in the mid west mess I've seen on the tube is a moron...but then, I'm more used to seeing it drain away than have to shovel it.

I did a lot of driving during the Christmas day storm visiting family, even in the Land Cruiser I am conservative. Saw plenty of morons though, and not always in 4wd vehicles.

Be careful driving in those ruts also as they tend to ice up.
I tend to stay in the snow ( unless it's total slush) as much as possible.

I had an idiot following me a few weeks ago in a heavy lake effects storm thu N.Y.
The Thruway was closed so i was on I86, anyway i caught up to 2 plow trucks
first one in right lane so i move left ,pass and move back then pass next one on the right
as he's plowing the left lane. Well dim-wit pulls right up behind truck #2 and starts flashing his high beams at him expecting him to move over for him. Can't beleive how stupid some people are.

I haven't punched anyone in 15 years. I may say I feel like it, but it probably isn't going to happen.

As I'm sure any Porsche driver can appreciate, I was constantly monitoring traction conditions. Sometimes the snow is better. Today the ruts were clear and dry.

Every big snow storm we get here, most of the vehicles that I see in the ditches, or on their roofs are 4x4 vehicles. I guess most people think they are invincible in a 4x4. They will go like hell in the snow and ice, but they steer and stop the same as any other vehicle, and with their taller ride height, they are more likely to flip when they go blowing off the road sideways at 50 mph.

It was 19º on the way back. It was dry out.

On the way up is was 32º and raining hard. I was more worried then.

See 4WD Idiots do that where I live in the Mountains. Years ago, I would have stopped. Later, I'd just call 911. I don't even call now.

I've never punched anyone, but sure yelled at a young female that passed me on the right shoulder going backwards as she headed off the road...

I had something similar happen years ago, but it was a small car. We were on a "loop" Interstate highway. The outer lane and middle lane were "OK", but the highspeed lane was still covered with snow. This "neon" or something like that, jumped into the highspeed lane and started to go for passing me. I saw in the review mirror, he hit the inside guardrail, then bounced into the cars beind me. Huge chain reaction accident, a few yards behind me.

Back at that time, I had a 55 miles commute, each way. I lived in the "mountains" of Western Massachusetts. I remember another incident, just like Legion's, where an SUV run past me, and then I found him, a few miles later, stuck in the inside snowbank on the interstate. This was the middle of nowhere, seriously. I stopped, pulled out a couple of shovels, and helped the guy dig out.

You are a nice guy. I might have stopped, but no diggin'. As long as the idiots passengers are alright, he's on his own.
