Should I file a police report?

boyfriend of temp worker comes in today with temp worker. In previous dialog last week, he wanted to join my company bringing graphic design to the table. I said we could talk in 2 weeks. I don't think he has much talent and would have let him down easy at that future discussion. He asked me again about it today and I said I don't think it will happen as I don't think we get along, pretty much exact quote. he then comes very close to me and starts to tell me he'll need a full accounting of his gf's hours by the end of the day (she's paid pretty much every other day, really needs the $) and leans into me like less than 2 inches from my face.

I told him he should leave. Shouting ensued (he didn't want to leave) as I led him to the doorway (second floor). He takes one step down and stops, now facing me, telling me I've got to turn away before he leaves, I haven't seen the last of him, etc. I tell him to leave or I will call the police. He leans into me and "softly headbutts" me, that is tries to push me away with his head. His gf is downstairs and shouting to leave. It may be of interest that yesterday she was doing a poor job and when I asked her if anything was wrong she broke into tears and said she's having a hard time at home (she lives with him).

When he pushed me away with his head, I walked away saying I'm calling the police. that was 20 minutes ago.

I think I handled getting him out of my offices well, I am very concerned about him coming back.

What should I do, if anything?

stomachmonkey 03-05-2010 06:21 AM

Yeah call the cops.

GH85Carrera 03-05-2010 06:24 AM

Yep, file a report and fire that chick. Get them both out of your life.

flatbutt 03-05-2010 06:25 AM

absolutely Shaun, this way when he forces you to defend yourself you're covered.

Shuie 03-05-2010 06:25 AM

Call speeder. If he is unavailable, call the police.

Seriously, call the police.

Christien 03-05-2010 06:29 AM

I think you handled it well, too, but do you really think the police will care? Maybe police are different there, but in my experience, they couldn't have cared less any time I've called them over something, from brawling in the street out front of our house in the middle of the night, to our car being stolen. I've lost a lot of faith in them, because it seems most if not all of my interactions with police are speed traps.

lendaddy 03-05-2010 06:30 AM

Call the OMARS and get an RO from the local hottie judge. Grab the marbles before he does.

scottbombedout 03-05-2010 06:31 AM

Got no faith in the Police either, but definitely call them.
Then when you are forced to protect yourself the next time, self defence will be easier to explain ;)

HelmetHead 03-05-2010 06:32 AM

Do you feel like you were assaulted? If yes, I'd call the police. Perhaps you should have a police officer escort your ex-employee off site when she shows again..boyfriend or not.

Tishabet 03-05-2010 06:35 AM

Agreed on calling the police... make this incident a matter of record.

masraum 03-05-2010 06:37 AM

Yeah, file a report just in case something else does happen, then you've got a history/paper trail. Hell, I think you could probably file assault/battery charges on him, but that sounds like a pain.

That whole "turn away" thing would have been a huge red-flag to me. Turning your back on someone that seems as unhinged as that kid sounds like a bad idea.

From the less practical more fantasy side, you probably could have gotten away with kicking him down the stairs after he head butted you. "He threatened and assaulted me, I was defending myself."

nostatic 03-05-2010 06:39 AM

Tough situation. Not sure calling now would do anything. Probably have to wait for the next time and call in the moment.

Knee-jerk reaction is just to fire her and wash your hands of the whole thing. But if she is a good worker, that kinda sucks. Getting involved in other people's lives though can get ugly quick.

Shaun @ Tru6 03-05-2010 06:39 AM

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't feel assaulted until he wouldn't leave and head butted me. I called the police, they asked for a brief rundown, I repeated the above, they are sending a car.

Thanks guys! I'm in the middle of running all my samples for fall (3 hours of sleep last night) with a hard deadline of 9AM tomorrow. Just don't need this now.

Rikao4 03-05-2010 06:40 AM

given his behavior..
he's got a sheet going already..
call the cops..

Rika

VINMAN 03-05-2010 06:40 AM

Yep. call the cops. Have it on record, so when you need to kick the crap out of him you will be covered.

speedracing944 03-05-2010 06:41 AM

I am surprised he didn't accidently fall down the stairs. Although he may have tried to find something to sue about. Non-employees have no right to be on premises.

Document the situation. He might be back.

Speedy:)

They don't care and they won't do anything about it, but it the timely filed police report goes a long way in getting a judge(hottie or not :) ) to issue a PPO against this guy. So it does serve a purpose.

My thoughts, once he touched you, self defense

That's what I was thinking :)

Seriously, it was the right decision to call the cops. He threatened you, and last I checked that's a crime (but I'm no lawyer). At the minimum, cops will have to fill out a report and you've got the beginning of a paper trail.

Good luck.

RRico 03-05-2010 06:45 AM

not only call the police, file a report and possibly a restraining order.
people like this cant leave things alone and just move on.
he may come back for revenge or just to hassle you.
If your complaint is on record and things escalate in the future,
you may need to use force to defend yourself or your property.

Neilk 03-05-2010 06:56 AM

Another plus for filing a police report is that if he abuses his g/f and she files a complaint, there will be multiple reports of him being abusive.

Shaun @ Tru6 03-05-2010 07:08 AM

WOW, I mean WOW!

I don't think I could have gotten better service from the Watertown Police Department than if I had just bought them all new squad cars, or gave all their kids a full season's worth of clothes.

Officer came in, interviewed me, took notes, he's going to call both of them and file an official report. He was very supportive of me as a small businessman and complimentary of the operation. He left me his card saying to call him any time and if he comes back, just dial 911 and they'll be here instantly.

Taxes well paid!

Thanks for the support gentlemen! Phew!

rouxroux 03-05-2010 07:51 AM

Is he Canadian?:D

HHI944 03-05-2010 07:54 AM

If he does that headbutt crap again: one hand on top of the other, do not interlock, on the back of his head, forearmsaround his neck, squeeze the elbows in. You're now free to land as many kicks to the groin, knees to the solar plexus as it takes. Just remember to keep your head to the side of his and not above. Basic krav maga clinch, very effective in this situation.

HardDrive 03-05-2010 08:08 AM

If it were me, I would have a pistol in my pocket/fannypack for the next couple weeks. Guy sounds unhinged.

Racerbvd 03-05-2010 08:11 AM

The moment he touched you, it went beyond a threat to assault...

But I do have a temper....

When you arre a business owner, this doesn't work, at least not if there is anyone else around. Plus, Shaun doesn't have the benefit of having Gators around, but a bunch of hogs do a good job of disposing of trash as well..

Rednine11 03-05-2010 08:21 AM

You did the right thing. You need the history with the Police Dpt in case he comes back and you have to deal with it. I feel sorry for the girlfriend. he is probably abusing her at some level.

Super_Dave_D 03-05-2010 08:24 AM

Did you fire the temp?

fastfredracing 03-05-2010 08:29 AM

Good job, I would have called the police as well. Just make sure you keep looking over your shoulder for the next week or so, and make sure you have a game plan in case there is another episode.
Sure are some whacko's out there. Probably a meth head , who knows?
It would have been hard not to smack him right in the face, but restraint in a situation like this is always a good thing

ODDJOB UNO 03-05-2010 08:36 AM

NOT SCREWING A .45 into his mouth is whats CALLED RESTRAINT!

call the cops, make report, have cops check for wants and warrants on this idiot, get RESTRAINING ORDER! the best money ever spent and lasts longer than SEX..................like FOREVER if need be.

TGTIW 03-05-2010 08:45 AM

Build a wall, preferably out of cinderblock, paint it some shade of poo.

I would fire the temp as well. There are plenty of drama-free people that would probably appreciate a job out there.

stomachmonkey 03-05-2010 09:07 AM

Shaun did the right thing. There was only one other witness, d-bags girlfriend. I'm sure she would have been impartial.
