3 phase hoist to single phase, can it be done?
I picked up this hoist for next to nothing on CL. Would like to convert it to single phase if I could. If not i will post it on Ebay and make a profit. I do have a use for it, but I don't want to spend a ton of money for a phase converter, would just like to make it work with single phase. Anyone know if its doable?
Thanks, Von ![]()

What horsepower is the motor? The best device out there for converting from single phase 220V to 3 phase is the Variable Frequency Drive! I have one for my mill and I can adjust the spindle speed using the VFD.
A VFD for a 2 hp motor goes for about $160. Very easy to install.

I have one of these to run my 3 phase mlling machine off of my 220 single phase shop wiring..... Simple to wire and works perfectly.
Mine is the 1-3 hp model like shown in this link, but they offer one size smaller for up to 1 hp motors. Here it is on the Phoenix website, but they sell them on ebay also for a bit cheaper with free shipping which is how I bought mine a couple years ago. 1 HP to 3 HP Static Phase Converter If your motor is 1hp or under, you should probably get this one for $59 on ebay w/ free shipping. Rotary phase converters or VFD's work great also, but for a simple motor with no complex electronics or computers, the static units that I linked to work just fine. IOW, the static converter works fine for my simple mill, but would probably not work properly on my CNC mill. When I get around to getting it going, I will probably have to get a rotary phase converter.

You can also use a three phase motor with no load as a rotary transformer. An old junk 3-phase with a higher horsepower rating. You have to pull start it before you use it.

Thanks for the link for the phase converters! Since the motor is only 1/2 HP I got the one for $59.00 off of ebay! Just hope it works now! Thanks again, Von

That is basically what the static phase converter does.
