Noisy Fan

I recently install a 8" fan in my AV closet to keep a new(to me) Adcom amp cool.

All is working well but the fan is noisy. It is a small clip on fan which I installed up near the ceiling to blow down on the equipment.

When the room is quiet, I can hear the fan echoing in the closet.

Anyone know how to make the fan run slower? I am thinking that by greatly reducing the fan speed, I can reduce the noise.

You might be able to put a Pot in the circuit and use that to adjust the fan speed. You do run into a problem with not enough power getting to the fan and possibly burning the motor out though.

Noise in a fan is probably a vibration issue. Can you attach the fan more securely? That may be the easiest way to fix your problem.

How about some sound deadener on the closet door? If you make the fan itself quieter, I think you'll make the fan less effective if you make it quieter.

As well as greatly reducing the airflow and therefore effectiveness of the fan. Are you pumping more into the closet than can be exhausted? If you are pumping 30CFM in but only exhausting 10CFM you are creating a high pressure zone that may generate noise on the fan blades. You really want to balance the air in and out.

Good point about the noise being made by high pressure.

I will do some testing this weekend. I may try a different fan as well.

Can you hang the fan from a bungee cord or a string and still get the job done? I had all manner of fans cooling a saltwater aquarium and the only way to really silence them is to isolate their vibration by hanging them or mounting them in a way where they can't resonate.

It depends on the fan type but they do make speed controls for fans like this. I have one in my PC. It's basically just a pot that you can turn to change the speed. Zalman makes it I believe but I'm not sure how bit the fan you're using is.

Get a plastic "muffin" fan... they have them at McMaster Carr.

These are what we use at the museum to cool electronics.

So you installed one of these:

Choose a less noisy fan.
