Lucas Oil

Saw Forrest Lucas on WindTunnel last night and started to wonder about this guy. He says he found a new use for and old product and built an empire. I did a little Googleing and found that he seems to add maybe sulfur to gear oil and that's about it.

What does the Lube Master and others know about this?

I haven't used the gear oil but I do use the fuel injector cleaner & top end treatment in my 05 GMC 4x4 & according to the computer I get about 2 mpg better when adding it. I'm not a big believer in ad claims but it does seem to work & the truck runs smoother as well.

He began his interest in oil from his love of racing. He didn't think he was getting good enough oils (tranny and engine) from local race shops so he looked to invent his own. He did some reasearch and found out that there are companies that make all the ingrediants you need to make any oil you want and all you have to do is basically blend them into a base of of your choice. The companies will actually sell you what are called 'additive packages' or 'add-pacs'. They will also tell you what grade base oils would work best and to sweeten the pot, they will share with you some common recipes and how they would test out according to engine and transmission manufacturers requirements.

He just took a passion and made a business out of it - absolutley nothing new. His stuff is no different than 20 other companies offerings - he just has a neat demo and a command on truck stops.

Yea, this guy is something else. High school graduate, maybe, drove a few trucks, "found" a barrel of something, mixed it together and wha-la, overnight sensation. He is not any kind of engineer at anything, except how to rake in the money.

That's the exact story he told. Lubey's story seems like as he got rolling. Forrest says he found that barrel and it was labeled, so he put some in his trucks' trans to work better in the CA desert with less repairs. He says he used to repair the trannys himself.

THEN, he went on to making oil products. As I said, some say the barrel had a sulfur compound in it.

I do know the story behind STP. The compound you buy as STP is another "barrel" product that is used to bring different batches of oil to spec. Say your batch tests as 29w, you need some thickener to bring it up. I'm sure this was in the pre multi grade days.

Anyway, someone discovered the stuff was really slippery and you couldn't hold a screwdriver by the round shank. Bingo, marketing here we come.

Now, I didn't realize that the little crank gear gizmo on the FLAPS counter was Lucas. Not too good of marketing, but I guess they didn't need me.
