can someone recommend a good one man tent?

and please..i dont want to topple my feeble "bank". one-man tents seem expensive! anyone sleep with a bivy sack? comfy? the better option?

i need to get to a top of a mountain, end of august..and stay there for a week or so. i'll buy a few extra fuel canisters and use my friend's stove..my lightweight solo type gear is very limited. thanks.

I bought a Marmot Earlylight 2 in May... Very nice tent.. Weighs about 5lbs... The extra room is worth it.

On the one man side... The Kelty stick 1 alwas intrigued me but they no longer make it...

And yes a good tent is pricey. But its worth it to stay dry... If you've ever spent the night in a cheap tent in an OK thunderstorm you know...

I have one of these and I have been happy with it. It is roomy for one and will work for two in a pinch. You can also pitch it with just the fly and floor tarp for an open shelter. I'd sell it if you are interested.

As a kid, we used Tube Tents. I think you can find them for about $5-10.00. That, a piece of rope and 4 clothes pins (to close up the ends) and you are good to go.

what mtn.? how high & where?

in the West that would mean some serious shelter; not a so-called summer tent as in the pic above

Quality costs money - and a good mtn. tent - altho no sub. for experience, skills, & a cool head - can mean life or death.

I've spent a fair amt. of time in bivy sacks -- comfy is not the right word.

sounds like insect exclusion is not going to be your problem - you want a good winter tent

you might call REI and ask them what to get after explaining your trip.

set it up beforehand several times - set it up in the dark until you can do it fast ('cuz ya might have to) & seal the seams very carefully

Vash, I have a Marmot as well. You can see 100 mph winds on the top of a Sierra Mtn.. Don't go cheap and for the extra lb or two I'd go two man the extra room is worth it.
Why not just borrow one for a one time trip ?

I had a nice one when I woke up this morning, but it's gone now.

My tent is similar to one pictured above, but with a rain fly. Two can fit, but they'd need to be really friendly.

A friend who is an "ultralight" backpacker just uses a couple of small, lightweight "sil-nyl" tarps, one for a groundcloth and one as a roof. He uses a trekking pole to hold the roof up, and three sides of the roof tarp are flush against the ground. He uses a mosquito needs to be solved. Altogether, all of his backpacking stuff (excluding consumables....water, food and fuel), weighs seven pounds, including the backpack.

This.

Or, the sierra designs lightning XT 2.

I have owned and used various models of bivy, and cannot really recommend them for summertime use.

Now, see, this is why I stick to kayaking. I carry 250 lbs of equipment including a 10" thick air mattress and a 2-man REI shelter for my own use. My input here would have you struggling up the mountain even with the help of a goat.

Man, tell me about it. I am primarily a backpacker these days (have approximately 4k miles under my belt at this point) and have done some fairly serious mountaineering in the past as well... both are very weight-conscious pursuits.

Just today I returned from a 3 day/2 night canoe trip in Maine, and the luxuries that paddling affords are pretty hard to ignore. We had a cooler to keep the steaks cold, bottles of wine, a cast iron dutch oven and skillet, the works.

I will vouch for the DAC poles too... My marmot has them.... Very good stuff

One thing to consider when buying new... Marmot gives you the ground cloth and a gear loft free with most of their tents...

I got 15% off on mine too...
