i seriously think my wife wants to move to Portland.

she wont stop talking about it. she just got back last night, about 4 hours after i got home. she loves the people, loves the food, loves the attitude!

she wants to move!! thanks for all the food recommendations. she probably ate at alot of them. i printed a few of your post. she says, THANKS!!

she also loves the great public transportation, the FREE bridges, the lack of sales tax..she LOVES IT!

maybe if she gets her nursing degree, we will discuss it. crazy talk. (i'll let her support me)..i can hunt and fish my ass off!

9% Income tax...rain, rain & more rain. After one winter, odds are great she'd want to run back to California. Are you both left wing fringe? If so, you'd fit in politically...

You might want to get the fish & game regs...I quit doing both decades ago, after you needed to be a Chicago lawyer to interpret them all, not to mention the license fees, tag fees, drawing for tags...all a PITA.

It's wet and rainy and overcast and cool on that side of the mountains 8+ months of the year. Did I mention it is gray for 8+ months? But other than that it is an absolutely gorgeous part of the world.

Make sure she leaves the keys to the Porsche. The Suby will do her well there.

Take her up there for a week in January or February.

My wife was talking that stuff one time when we went to Whitefish, MT in June for a wedding. I pointed out all the cars with the extension cord coming out the grill, "Is that an electric F-250?" No, it is so the motor does not freeze. "Why don't they put anti-freeze in it?" If it gets cold enough, it will still freeze and the oil will get about the consistency of butter right out of the fridge.

I also pointed out the 12 foot poles along the road, and told her it was so the snow plow can stay on the road when the snow is that deep, she was skeptical, so I told her to ask one of the locals. When they gave her the straight of it, she decided maybe it was not such a great idea.

It's been several years since I last picked up a copy for an out of state friend who thought he might like to go Elk hunting. It was about the size of the current Sunday OREGONIAN. Lots of pages, lots of fine print.

So, Vash...suggest you find someone to mail a copy to you, let you make up your own mind.

Dunno if I'd want fish from the Willamette when Portland sewers overflow into the river during periods of heavy rain...but they're working on cleaning that one up...

Tobra's suggestion was a good one...rent a place in Portland for a couple of months...January or February...

I lived there for a year and have posted on this before. It's beautiful like few other places on earth during the summer, but the winters (which go from late August/early September to mid-May) are enough to make a person suicidal. Dreary, miserable, cold, raw, grey, day after day after day with NO (I mean NO letup. There was one period of 60 consecutive days (I counted) where I encountered some kind of rain (usually drizzle or near-freezing drizzle).

The summers are beautiful, but don't underestimate how downright depressing the place can get when you can't go outside and do anything meaningful for 6 months of the year.

The worst aspect however was not the rain, it was the jobs market. And this was in 2002-2003. It was simply awful. I can only imagine how bad it is right now.

The novelty will wear off...if you are both outdoors and enjoy sun on the skin...not sure how long you would be able to take it in the Portland. When I lived in Vancouver it was great initially but the 6months of gloom is horrid..Vitamin E and the sun are your friends (especially as you get older).

Geez, and I thought Schenectady, NY was bad. It was usually grey from Nov-Jan each year. No thanks! I'll keep my summer heat.

Hey at least here it's only cold from maybe November to March... And you get the sun even though it's cold out.

Still, I'm a warm-blooded person and given the opportunity, I'd be gone to TX, AZ, FL, etc. in a heartbeat. Just no jobs right now so for now I deal with the goods & bads of this place.

You lived up this way so you understand I think. The jobs market is actually pretty okay right now here, but that whole winter thing... blah. Not my fave.

Given a choice between here and back in Long Beach though I pick this place 10 times out of 10. No stupid neighbors, no fighting over parking, no stupid CA taxes, fees and bureaucracy, etc. I have one stoplight in my town. Life ain't too bad.

You need 4 sports, one for each season. You need to look forward to the winter...

Did she experience the traffic? My trip to Portland was great except getting around town in a car was a nightmare. The interstate moved at 5 to 10 MPH. The area was great once you got out of town.

You learn to not use the freeway to get around town.

Surface streets usually work fine, it is a small city.

Admittedly on some commutes, it is hard to avoid the freeway - worst case is if you're commuting to/from Vancouver WA, there is no alternative to the freeway (unless/until the Hwy 5 bridge is rebuilt w/ light rail).
