Is That A Cat With A Reflective Collar, Or A UFO?

We have a cat who likes to roam, including around the busy street by our house. Where a previous cat was hit and killed. So we got him one of these as a collar. We turn it on when he goes out at night - he only stays out for an hour or two, then returns to sleep.

Buy Duravision Pro Reflective Armband with 4 LED Lights Safety at Road Runner Sports

When a light is on him, like headlights or a flashlight, the collar glows brilliantly. And when the LEDs are blinking, he looks like a low-flying UFO. Hilarious. The battery should last a month or so, then we'll either replace it (CR2032) or just rely on the absurdly reflective material.

The downside is that there is no release mechanism if he gets the collar snagged on something. So we just adjusted it loosely so he can get his head out if need be. These bands sell for $6 in stores, cheaper than an actual cat collar. You can write on the surface w/ a Sharpie. Should work for a dog too.

I don't know how to post video here, other than posting to youtube then linking. Is there a way? Maybe I can do it via photobucket

Yeah, you have to use a 3rd party like Youtube. Quick look at photobucket shows that they host video too.

Photobucket

This is with LEDs off, and shining a small flashlight at the cat. No camera flash.

He does seem kind of humiliated by it. Lot of psychotherapy when he gets older.

Excellent ......makes them easy to run over at night. They are a pest here in Australia. They are decimating our native fauna.

I'm happy to say that my cats are decimating our local fauna of the rodent variety. They nail about 10 rats and mice a year, that we know of. The house is nicely pest-free. If only they'd lick up ants and pull weeds, then they'd really earn their keep.

John, be aware...there ARE folks who do purposely try to run cats over...sick folks, but they exist...even in "weird" Portland, Oregon.

LOL....I don't go out of my way to run them down but I sure as hell ain't swerving to miss one. The friggin neighbors cat is always killing our native lizards and just leaves them on my front lawn or they are left to die where they lie from massive injuries. I don't hate cats, just hate the damage they cause.

Got two of them living in my back yard at the moment - great for keeping the snail population down. For the benefit of our North American friends, they are quite harmless and about 12 to 15" long.

And one of the reasons our cats live in an enclosure during the day and inside at night.
