We used to (o.k., maybe we still...) flash the "gang" sign - the right hand axis formed with the thumb, index, and middle fingers. I defy anyone to come up with more "geek" than that...

What about the right hand rule for moments in mechanics and induced magnetic fields in coils of wire with current running through. Thumb in direction of positive current flow, fingers show the direction of magnetic field lines.

How do you know you're talking with an extroverted scientist, engineer, technologist, etc?

They're looking at your shoes.

The Electrical engineers always dissed the rest of the engineers, because they thought they were smarter.

The Mechanical Engineers always dissed the Civils, because they KNEW they were smarter. And they always hated those stupid double-E courses. But they also dated better looking women than the rest of the engineers, because they had the best cars.

Civils, well, what can you say about them? It's either concrete, asphalt or poo...

I'm an ME but became one later in life and ended up in management, so I'm different

My idea of fighting words are:
"You have a funding request that is still awaiting approval, right?"

actually, Civ. E. at one time was a huge growth field and drew a lot of top people - but we've pretty much built all the big dams, etc. already

now for ME... I took a heatX ME course once & was amused when the professor overheard all the EEs, EEEs and EEEEEEEEEks, complaining about "being forced to take this stoopid course", so he went thru a chimney type convection analysis and then announced people who don't understand this have destroyed many expensive computer systems for lack of cooling. It got real quiet after that.

Civil engineers - rebar benders, asphalt spreaders and grout trowlers.
