Hit-n-run

Well, I was just in one. Waiting at a light to turn right, there was a bicycle rider on my left and I couldn't see through him to see if there was any traffic coming.. don't want to pull out in front of someone, now, do I?
Arse behind me honks his horn. I pull forward a hair to try to see through a gap in the rider's arm. there's cars coming.
About five second after I pull forward, I get hit from behind! BAM! Not hard enough to jar us significantly, but hard enough to know we've been hit.
A gap opens, and I turn the corner and pull into the gas station.
The guy who hits me? He turns.. and nails it. Runs.

Thinking back, I should have not rounded the corner...he would have had no place to go.
The truck waiting to exit the gas station kept me from being able to pull out fast enough once I realized he was fleeing to to catch up get his license plate number. He was travelling down a 35 doing at least 50-60 to get away...

GRR. the nerve of people.

No apparent damage to the Saturn I was driving.

Sounds more like an assault than a hit n run.

Happened to my wife a few months back. She pulled into a side street (WTF?), other car kept going. We coughed up the $500 deductible to replace the rear bumper.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I had a hit-and-run last year and we did catch up to the gal in the end. She drove right into a construction zone and had to stop. We got her plate number and called the police.

I got the police report and the drivers information from the police and I filed a small claims suit against the driver. I won the default judgment and to this day I've never seen a dime, nor will I ever.

No insurance, no license, driving her fathers car that was not current on it's registration. Many multiple traffic violations and outstanding judgments. Not only am I out getting my car fixed, I'm also out the filing fees and the money I paid the process server.

It's like no one cares anymore.

I hate to be too pessimistic either, but it seems our justice system goes after folks who they can fine for something with much more vigor than it goes after those it can't. Once someone falls into that ever growing niche in our society with nothing to lose - monetarily - the pursuit of them seems to stop. Low-level losers like this seem to reach a break over point where they become untouchable. It costs too much to put them in jail (and they really don't care if they wind up there anyway), and they can't pay the fines.

There should be some kind of "lifetime achievement award" for these folks, much like the "three strikes" laws for more serious felons. If, for some reasonable period of time, they demonstrate they just aren't getting it, and will remain a low level pain in the ass of society, we should just get to euthanize them. If that were the clearly defined, consistent result of such a lifestyle, you can bet your hairy ass these people would straighten up and fly right. Or at least we would be rid of them. Today, their actions simply lack any consequences they care about. Call it the "Logan's Run" approach - death at 30 if they haven't done anything by then.

I'm glad the red light runner who hit me today has ins.

well, at least she had a card that said she had ins.

BTW, Scott - if you have a judgment, it will usually be good for a long time (10 yrs. in OR.; can renew for another 10)

so, if you find them years later, you can go after them, get costs of collection and interest (in OR)

check the laws in your state

Yes, that's sound advice, it was good for seven years at the time I filed, and I can file again within 12 months of the expiration date, and I plan to do that.

My attorney buddy that helped me file said that chances are good at some point the person will want to clear their name, and be forced to pay back some of their debts. I'm not as optimistic, but what else can you do?

For the past two years, I have fought with dash-cams.

"Fought" you ask?

Yes. I have owned two, and both have FAILED. The first one was a cheap $65 unit, and it worked for about 6 months. The second was $250, and it made beautiful videos...but it failed after one year! It wouldn't work right out of the box, so I returned it to the guy in Texas that I bought it off of on eBay, he checked it out, and said it worked fine. He told me that he thought I had a voltage problem in the lighter socket, so I tested it and sure enough, it was just barely 12 volts with the engine running. I wired it into the circuit board on my 928, and that helped, but a few months later it failed again, this time completely.

I installed this cam not for fun or for accidents. About two years ago, I had a non-traffic run-in with a member of the local constabulary, and my attorney wound up in a conference with the police chief. I don't know if the "officer" got a letter in his file, but it was made clear to him and to the department that I was willing to spend the $ to fight any harassment that came my way. To this day, I haven't been pulled over or harassed.

That individual does not like me now-

To make sure that I wasn't a victim of police harassment, since every member of the local police force in question knows my name and knows my 928 [Might as well drive around with a 10 foot neon sign above my car!], I installed a dash cam with a microphone to record anything and everything that went on while I was driving. I think that this is a good idea for every Porsche owner, since we tend to be victimized by bored police in many places around the country. Porsche's are more common than chevy's in Fort Lauderdale, but that's not the case in North Carolina or a lot of other places. A good camera can give your attorney some ammunition if you are stopped for no reason and/or harassed for no other reason than the car you are driving.

Now...if only I could find a dash cam that will last!

N!

Yes, go back to the intersection and ask about surveillance cams. Since it's a H&R, it 's crime and the LEO's can get the HD's.

I swear, if I get hit, I'm going to open the door and lie down on the ground right there. It's about all you can do.
